Kerrville Park Updates.I will be heading there real soon not only to check on my daughter at Schreiner but also walk the trails along these parks. My question is despite what happened and the amount of destruction and death. Who plans to walk these areas knowing now the history. Portions of the Kerrville River Trail and Louise Hays Park to reopen on Monday (10/6/2025)
The Kerrville Parks and Recreation Department will reopen select segments of the Kerrville River Trail and designated areas within Louise Hays Park on Monday, Oct. 6, 2025, as part of ongoing flood recovery efforts. Reopening includes:
• River Trail from Birkdale Trailhead to G Street Trailhead
• River Trail from Schreiner University Trailhead to G Street Trailhead
• G Street Trailhead to Tranquility Island (accessible only from Louise Hays Park)
Several areas remain closed due to unsafe conditions, including bridges at Camp Meeting Creek, Lemos Street, and the Butt Holdsworth Memorial Library. Tranquility Island will not be accessible from Riverside Nature Center or the BHM Library. All trail segments west of Tranquility Island / Lemos Street remain closed until further notice. Additionally, all play structures along the River Trail remain closed until further notice.
Trail and Park Users are reminded to:
• Stay on marked trails
• Use designated parking areas
• Follow posted signs and closures
• Avoid trespassing on private property
• Limit use to daylight hours only
• Refrain from using motorized vehicles on trails
Although select areas of Louise Hays Park and the Kerrville River Trail are reopening, visitors should be aware that the park experience will not yet be the same as it was prior to the flooding. Louise Hays Park sustained extensive damage during the July 4 flooding event, and it will require significant time, funding, and public input to restore the park to its familiar condition. Patience and understanding from the community are appreciated as restoration efforts continue. Rebuilding the park to be stronger and more resilient is a complex process involving careful planning and collaboration.
