bbk : IKR? It's a freaking joke. They don't believe in educating in TX just playing Football. I don't even hear about them redoing baseball fields and Gyms. After school programs?

@chasinghosts : Sorry you didn't hear about it but baseball fields and gyms have been redone or added with the last bond. The new bond, if the school board passes as the committee decided, will have a ton of fine arts projects, a large technology package, new playgrounds, a new middle school, additions at Summer Creek, and more. Pretty proud of the package we proposed.

Charles Street had been nearly quarantined it was in such disrepair. The renovation was part of the last bond. It is used for sub-varsity and middle school games.

I think kids that do not go to public school are the lucky kids . I know 3 mothers that taught their kids . One of those mothers has 8 or 9 kids . My sister in-law said all the kids are straight a students in college . And I hear that same info from the other mothers . One of the mothers was a teacher I think in Humble . Single mother & quit her teaching job to be a waitress at I Hop & teach her child . She told us her child was doing great . She was also in dancing classes which she loved .

@bbk : Some are, some aren't. I've seen plenty of really strange kids come out of home school situations. The whole element is basically a good thing, but, it doesn't give them good opportunity to be in different situations where they need different skills. Some parents just don't have enough well rounded education themselves to be in that situation either. I believe heavily in socialization and some of these kids out there are just downright creepy now. That and parents can often look through rose colored glasses when looking at their children, and the sure aren't going to tell you their kids aren't doing well and they made a poor choice.

tflea : the money can ONLY be used for what voters approve. New classrooms were not passed, this did. Same issue in Cleveland. Bond to build a second High School failed this year. Half the school is portables. The comments "are don't spend the money on the stadium". That was specifically approved in another bond.

@ParksideRes : Exactlywhat I'm talking about. Fix the important things first and then fix the stadiums when you have what it is necessary. Prioritization seems to be the issue. Why don't people get that?

@HumbleGirl : That's great, but again, learning materials should be much more important to everyone. At my kids school they got their extracurricular funds from fundraisers and stadium funding from Pro players that attended their schools. Actors, Musicians and Artists that have made it give back in many ways too. It didn't come from the taxpayers pockets, and costs about a third of what they are shelling out here.

I told y'all to vote "NO" on the half-billion+ bond... yeah, the one with the 100 million elementary school.

I don't know what the Board is smoking... bonds isn't free money... y'all are gonna have to pay for the **** the HISD board is dreaming off. Enjoy your stadium.

@chasinghosts : These kids had plenty of being around other kids . The Humble school teacher had her child in dancing so she was with kids . She also went to Sunday school & church camp . The mother was smart to move near her parents where she had a sitter while she was working . The lady with the 8 or 9 kids . They bought the house next door to their home . All her school work took place in that house . Her kids were in scouting & all church activities. Girls in dancing . Their dad is a politician & these kids are exposed to lots of people ' Hubby's youngest sister is kin to the mother by marriage .
The 3rd is a young woman that married my hubby's oldest sisters first born son . That sister in-law was also a school teacher . My sister in-law was very pleased with her & her education . She became an RN . So far as I know they are all doing well .

@sandman : Dude you are my buddy. I like your standpoint on virtually everything. But, I disagree with you here.

The district is growing like crazy. And it doesn't have huge commercial taxes like say Galena Park which includes the ship channel. To keep up with growth we have to float these bonds.

Now, you don't like it, get on the bond committee like @Humblegirl has done and make your voice heard given the facts. Those facts will surprise you.

Now, as to Charles St project. We do have an obligation to educate our children academically. No doubt about that. But there is a social aspect we must address as well. This new facility will present that aspect to many of them.

@bbk : Practicing things like cheer and dance become less social as they grow older because the kids compete 1 on one. That's good that they turned out well but I am concerned for some of these kids that the parents just want to home school so they don't have to get up and out early, kids like my grands that are very smart but precocious and Mom can't get her face out of her phone. Some kids are just not cut out for it, same goes for parents.

I knew many who homeschooled and now are great adults!
Football is a necessary evil? How many die or are maimed because of all the tackles?

@Clydepuckett :

I think I've stated my position on this multiple times, but here it is again:
- I am not against the projects, like I do not object the need for a new elementary school.
- I am against spending $100 MILLION dollars on ONE elementary school. I am no construction expert, but that seems a "little" excessive... like 5x-10x times excessive
- I am not against renovating a football stadium; I am against putting up $10 MILLION on such renovation

I believe that instead of a HALF BILLION PLUS bond, the district could've done the same stuff for half or less than half.

You are right, we have an obligation to educate our children... living within our means and sound financial principles should be high on the priority list.
