HUMBLE, Texas - A man was shot by a Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy while deputies responded to a reported disturbance at a home in the Humble area Wednesday afternoon, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

The shooting happened in the 15600 block of Mourning Dove Drive.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to the scene at approximately 1:37 p.m.

During a news conference, HCSO Assistant Chief John Nanny said the caller reported that she had been assaulted by her 47-year-old son. When deputies arrived, the man's mother came out of the house with apparent injuries.

"She had a knot on her forehead and a laceration on her face," Nanny said.

The man locked himself inside the home and refused deputies' commands to come outside. A short time later, deputies noticed smoke coming from the house and believed a fire had been started inside. They then made plans to enter the home.

Nanny said the man came out of the garage armed with two knives, and one deputy shot him once in the upper torso. Deputies rendered first aid before the man was taken to a hospital. His condition has not been released.

No deputies were injured during the incident, Gonzalez said.

Fire marshals are investigating the fire, while the officer-involved shooting is also under investigation.

The man's mental state has not been released, but Nanny said law enforcement has responded to the home on previous occasions.

The deputy who fired his weapon is 31 years old and has been with the sheriff's office for seven years, according to Nanny.

Deputies' body-worn camera footage is being reviewed to determine whether protocols were followed and to establish exactly what led to the shooting.
