Harris County jailer charged with DWI, placed on administrative leave after crash, fleeing: HCSO

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A Harris County detention officer is on administrative leave for allegedly driving drunk, crashing into a homeowner's fence, and leaving the scene on Sunday, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Gerardo Segundo, 21, who has worked for the Harris County Sheriff's Office for three years, is charged with misdemeanor DWI, authorities said.

More than a day later, pieces of a pickup were still scattered outside Alfonso Pineda's Humble-area home.

Surveillance video captured blinding headlights, an engine revving, and then the crash that woke Pineda and his family around 1:50 am. on Sunday.

"It was getting really close, really loud. When the tire kept spinning, like 30 seconds later we heard boom, the biggest boom we could have heard," Pineda told Eyewitness News.

By the time he got outside, the driver was gone, but a truck bumper was left behind. That was not the only clue.

"He thought he could get away," Pineda said.

According to court records, deputies from the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office followed a trail of liquid from the crash scene to a home just a few streets away. There, they found a damaged pickup, court records say, and brought it back to the scene to match the parts left behind.

"Luckily, they got to the truck. They found the truck and got to the person," Pineda said.

ABC13 has learned Segundo is not only a neighbor of Pineda's but also a Harris County detention officer.

"I did not know that," Pineda said. "It would have been way better for him if he would have just stayed."

While Segundo refused a field sobriety test, he was still charged with driving while intoxicated. Court records note bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and an odor of alcohol.

During a probable cause hearing, a magistrate addressed a separate, more serious allegation that Segundo intentionally damaged the fence.

"Sir, at this time I'm going to find no probable cause," the magistrate said.

The magistrate said prosecutors had not provided sufficient evidence of criminal mischief, and that second charge was dismissed.

No one answered at Segundo's home on Monday, and online records did not list an attorney of record.

Pineda estimates the damage at $3,000. He said he is grateful the truck did not hit just a few feet over, where he and his wife were asleep on the other side of the wall.

"It could have been a lot worse," Pineda said.

Segundo is on leave, pending his court proceedings, HCSO said.

West-Tex: Oh, geez! He's 21 and has worked for the Harris County Sheriff's Office for 3 years. Although he refused to be tested when they caught up with him, there were enough police officers there witnessing his slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, etc. to affirm the DWI charge.

I'd assume that he will no longer be employed by the Sheriffs Office in spite of the misdemeanor level of the DWI due to his hit-and-run charge. So sad! He of all people should have known better. So glad no one was injured.
