On this day August 30 The Allen brothers were New York entrepreneurs named Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen who founded the city of Houston on August 30, 1836. Augustus Chapman Allen (1806-1864): Born in New York, he worked as a teacher and math professor before moving to Texas with his brother to pursue land speculation. He was married to Charlotte M. Allen, whose inheritance helped fund their land purchases. John Kirby Allen (1810-1838): The younger brother and business partner who also served as a member of the Republic of Texas House of Representatives. He never married and died young from a congestive fever in 1838. Founding Houston
