I remember 6-digit dialing, where the first two digits were spoken as letters of the alphabet. Or even the name of a 'thing'. Growing up, our number started with 926. Some folks would say WA6, others would say Walnut 6.

Ours was NE4 - 4168 ( Nebraska 4 - 4168 was our number when I was a kid. Dallas was the first city in Texas to go an area code.

@Itsme: Grew up in a suburb of Philly where our number was LE 2-9057 (LE =
Lehigh). Early on, it was a party line used by 2 households. Later, it was just our line using the black rotary dial phone. Remember what a dial tone and a busy signal sounded like? Ah, Things That Aren't There Anymore!

I've only had 2 area codes. 214 and 713, respectively. It was really tough changing from one to the other. I resisted for a long time!I miss Dallas. 🥹

Growing up. my aunts little Texas town, you only had to dial 5 numbers for local calls. And of course my Grandparents you just had to say " Operator ring Eda Jones please! Mathis Texas in the early 70's. Then they got fancy and had a "party" line...

We had a party line as well . When the party line was ended we got to keep the orginial number . Ours wad a black rotary phone as well we had that phone until we moved out of Philly.
