Humble is first school district to have three teams play for state baseball titles
Atascocita isn't just battle-tested. The Eagles have been forged in postseason fire.For coach Jeremy O'Neill and company, the unrelenting road to Round Rock has questioned their mettle in just about every way possible. But while Atascocita has faced elimination in four different games throughout its playoff run, the Eagles responded every single time.Now they have a chance to prove themselves once again on the biggest stage in Texas.Atascocita (32-12-2) will battle Waco Midway (32-8) for the UIL Class 6A Division I state championship at 4 p.m. Saturday at Dell Diamond. The Eagles are one victory away from claiming the program's first title in the finale of what's been a grueling 14-game postseason."They've been through a lot of adversity, and they've fought through it," said O'Neill, who's in his second season at the helm. "They're not too worried about it. They're just going to keep battling and keep playing their brand of baseball. I think that's the biggest difference with these guys - just the love they have for each other and their grit and how they play the game."The Eagles will have some familiar company in Round Rock this week. Humble ISD is sending three teams to compete for state championships with Kingwood playing in the Class 6A Division II title game and Kingwood Park competing for the Class 5A Division II crown. It's an unprecedented accomplishment made possible by the UIL's new split-division playoff format."To represent Humble ISD with three teams going to the state finals, that's something like I've never heard of before," O'Neill said. "It's an honor, and it's a privilege, No. 1. I'm blessed to be able to coach at Atascocita. It's a great school, and being in this area, it's really great to see all the success Humble ISD has had. I'm just glad for all the players here. We have a ton of great players in this area, just all on top of each other, and I'm so glad everybody's getting a chance to go play. I coulnd't be happier to go watch these games this weekend and support these guys."Atascocita and Kingwood (38-4), ranked No. 10 in the country by MaxPreps, shared the District 23-6A title, splitting two meetings during the regular season. Kingwood, coached by 2008 graduate Michael Oros, will take on reigning Class 6A champion Tomball (34-6-1) at noon on Saturday with hopes of claiming its first state title since 2005. Kingwood Park (34-9-1) will battle reigning 5A champion Grapevine (35-3) at 4 p.m. Friday for a shot at its first championship."It's pretty unbelievable," said Kingwood Park coach Chris Buechner, who's in his third season leading the Panthers. "This community, it's a baseball community. Atascocita is a big football school, but they're also a big baseball school, and they're good at a lot of things. Kingwood is the same way. It's just nice to finally get on the map and make sure everybody understands how good baseball is in this area. We root for each other. Me and O'Neill and Oros, we all text back and forth, just kind of rooting each other on, and we want the best for those guys, too."
Throughout the 76-year history of UIL baseball, no school district has ever had three teams compete in state championship games in the same year, so the opportunity that lies ahead for Humble ISD is tremendous. For Kingwood, the historical aspect of winning Saturday coincides with another sport. The Mustangs have a chance to make their school just the eighth in UIL history to claim both baseball and softball state titles in the same year. That list currently includes Barbers Hill (2021), D'Hanis (2022, 2019), Slocum (2018), West (2016), Aledo (2014), Weimar (2003) and Shiner (2002). The Kingwood softball team captured its first state championship in Austin last weekend.Both teams shared in a special celebration last Saturday night as they pulled onto campus in their buses about 15 minutes apart and were greeted by the cheering Kingwood faithful.
"We do a lot with softball here at Kingwood," Oros said. "We try to do some dinners and things like that, support each other, go to each other's games. Our winning pitcher in Game 3 (of the state semifinals), Christian Mata, his mother (Christina Mata) is one of their assistants, so he's back and forth. The kids have a great relationship with each other, and we got to welcome them back (from state), which was awesome. It was good night Saturday for Kingwood High School."While Atascocita will have its hands full with a Midway team seeking its first title since 2003, Kingwood will be dealing with Tomball squad that isn't ready to come down from the mountaintop. The Cougars are looking to become the first Houston-area program to claim back-to-back state championships since Elkins in 2002 and 2003. The Mustangs are looking to play the spoiler and have hopes of capping their postseason run with an 11-1 record. The team's only playoff loss came in Game 2 of the state semifinals against Dripping Springs.

So what's been the key to the Mustangs' success?"The simplest answer would be that it's the closest-knit group I've ever been a part of," Oros said. "The more complex answer is that starting in the fall, we had a calling card of unity, doing everything as one, making sure everything was uniform. The leaders of our team are fantastic leaders, and they took it and ran with it. Whether it be a fall competition or a practice game or some kind of drill we were doing, everything was a competition against each other. But, at the end, there was always that sense of unity walking out of the dugout at the end of practice. That's the biggest takeaway I can say about these guys. We're not ready to be done, and we know we're done Saturday night no matter what happens, but we're not ready for it to happen."Kingwood Park wants to end its season on a high note as well. The Panthers put their fortitude on display in the state semifinals last week, losing the opener against Liberty Hill before battling back with victories in Games 2 and 3. After a sour ending to the playoffs last year, the returning players are determined to find even more redemption from their early exit and go out on top."We have a good core group of these guys from last year that lost in the first round to Hallsville," Buechner said. "Obviously, they didn't like that. They worked hard last year and fell short of their goals. This whole offseason, it's just been their determination and them grouping together and pushing each other and holding each other accountable. They wanted to hit our goal, which is winning a state championship, but just getting here is a huge accomplishment, too. This is the first time in program history that this has happened, and it's just a testament to these kids and how much work they've put in.
