Rescued a fallen fledgling, a baby blue jay. The storm blew it out of a nest or it was learning to fly as it had wings but no tail feathers. My doggies tried to attack it and the blue jay's mom and dad were dive-bombing at them. I noticed it and as I was cleaning the pool and took the pool net then got my dogs away and got it to step up onto the net well it fell off then I tried to scoop it with my hands and yeah nope. Then those parent birds were attacking me. LOL. Once again with the pool net I was able to put it over the fence while the parent birds were swooping down mad while it was raining. It dropped over the fence and I poured bird feed over near it so the parents would go to it. I did all I could.

@Catmae :
I looked up on the Texas Parks and Wildlife webpage and mockingbirds and not sure about the blue jays, but it's natural for them to have fledglings fall and the parents attack any harmful predators as they learn to fly. We looked over the fence several times and he is no longer there. He was just needing a rest. He had some good looking wings.

I did all I could.

@westie : You did exactly the right thing, creating a safe place for it away from the dogs. Now it has a chance, and the parents will look after it. Thank you…

mockingbirds and not sure about the blue jays

@westie :

Mocking Birds and Blue Jays are the two most "territorial" small(song) birds in SE Texas(maybe all of TX, I dunno)....They will chase away anything in their "territory" once they've established that area....Mocking Birds are probably the worst....It's not uncommon to see them swooping down and pecking on the back of a cat just passing by....They even do it to humans, coming within inches of their heads and sometimes even pecking it....

I've never understood how the USELESS "Mocking Bird" is the "State Bird" of FIVE states....Not only is it territorially aggressive but it's also extremely ANNOYING when it sings/mocks all the other bird's songs late at night and through the early morning, especially if it's perched not far from your bedroom window!....

And if you've got a backyard "bird feeder" like me and enjoy watching a variety of birds stopping by like I do, I'm sure you can't stand when a Mocking Bird or Blue Jay comes in and runs all the other birds away!....Loading Image...

@EddyFree :
I have to say though, I do like it when my blue jays come chase away the pesky squirrels. They eat all the peanuts or dig in my plants. I enjoy the little guys but they need to be put in their place, sometimes!

It's all good in the nature world. Some things we like, some things we don't, but in the end it all works out…

Speaking of nature, while I was hurrying to get to HEB before they closed at three yesterday, I stopped my car to get this picture. A Red Tail Hawk in someone's yard. I got three pictures before some kids on bikes made him fly away.
