Atascocita Child riding scooter hit by car in Atascocita neighborhood, Harris County Pct. 4 says

ATASCOCITA, Texas (KTRK) -- A child riding a scooter was hit by a car in the Atascocita area on Wednesday morning, according to deputies.

Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman said the crash happened at Timber Forest Drive and Atascocita Road.

Deputies did not say how old the child is or where the child was heading. Humble ISD's Timberwood Middle School is just down the road from the intersection.

In a post on social media, Herman said EMS responded to the scene and treated the child for reported injuries. The child's condition was not immediately known.

The intersection was shut down during the investigation into the crash, but it was reopened around 9 a.m., according to Pct. 4.

West-Tex : Last year on our way to school a young man on a scooter with his little sister almost got hit by a car. The car was making a right turn and must not have seen the pair. The kid was able to stop on a dime and keep his sister from falling. I think that's what kept them from being hit. The car managed to stop, but it was still so very close to hitting them.

It is absurd to force children to cross that intersection to get to school. It needs a pedestrian bridge or bus service from the south side of Atascocita Rd.

So I looked up one of the closest houses on the opposite side of Atascocita Rd from Timberwood (in Clayton's Corner) and they are provided transportation.

MrsT : Wow. With the amount of kids that cross there, and the hoards of parents who park at CVS to pick up other kids, I assumed otherwise. The parents who make their kids cross that intersection just so they don't have to sit in traffic for 15 minutes blows my mind!

Sammee :
Yea I see kids crossing there all the time. They probably don't want to wait on the bus to get them home. It makes me very nervous.

This bus stop pick up was 7:44 and school starts at 8:20. Maybe they're not getting up in time for it.

What I found interesting is transportation from that same address I checked is NOT provided to AHS. Even though they're not crossing a major road it's 1.9 miles. That's quite a trek.

(Before anyone jumps me, yes I know they've always had that 2 mile rule. 😂)

Sammee : I heard that after 1960 is finished, construction will begin on Atascocita Rd. Maybe one will be added. Emoticon

It was 2 when I went to Humble ISD, and that's been 25 years ago and when my daughter was. I believe it's a state funding thing.

Sammee : Don't say pedestrian bridge too loudly. We'll get stuck with another never ending on construction overpass!

Do any schools have crossing guards? Perhaps that is the answer.

I never realized it was a state thing until someone else mentioned it. This is from the TEA website.
Huffman MS/HS drops off kids that live like a block from the school. Idk if that's because they consider the lack of sidewalks/shoulders to be a hazardous condition.
