May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

With warmer weather, it’s time to remind everyone to be on the alert and to share the road with motorcyclists.

Both motorcyclists and motorists need to be aware of their surroundings. Checking blind spots, mirrors and using turn signals are necessary when changing lanes and when passing.

Distractions has been on the rise! Driving distracted could mean the difference between seeing a motorcyclist or not when preparing to change lanes. Don’t let one phone call or text change anyone’s life forever!

Riders need to take precautions as well. Take a defensive driving course, wear protective gear and keep your bike in its best working condition. Also, be aware of any road hazards and dangerous weather conditions.

Most of all, enjoy your ride and make it home safely!

We started playing a fun game when DD was little, to condition her to be aware of motorcycles on the road, since her grandpa rode and had a few stories of almost getting plowed over. The game was that whoever spotted a motorcycle first would yell "motorcycle!" and that person gets a point. Obviously, the most points win. That helped us to be more aware, too. Now that she's driving, I know she is conditioned to see them. She has always been a very competitive child, so games like this worked great as teaching tools. lol
