Went out in the back yard to throw fertilizer around some plants & I happened to look down & I almost stepped on a dead RAT YUCK !!!

In my whole life my parents never had a mice or rat in the house or yard & we haven't either . I had my husband get a shovel & turn it over to see if it had been killed by another animal . He said no it had not been . So I guess it just dropped dead in the middle of my back yard GROSS !!!!!

It probably got into some rat poison at a neighbor's house.

You need to get proactive to be on the safe side as you do not want an infestation.

@cbp210 :

Like how ??? Are you talking about putting traps out somewhere ?? I'd be afraid to just put poison out because there are some cats that come into my yard that I think belong to some of the folks around me .

Use one of these with the Tom Cat poison blocks. They are pet-proof. I have one in the backyard because of a neighbor's junk pile in their backyard. My dog would not be able to get into it no matter how hard he tried. Just place the poison at the far corner of your yard, away from your house and garage. The baits lure the rats and mice, and you sure don't want to lure them to your warm home or garage!

I have a question. What happens if your dog gets hold of a poisoned rat?

@Blackhorse77
Its not impossible that your dog could get a secondary poisoning from eating a dead rat but pretty unlikely! The amount of poison it takes to kill a rat and die from it, then the time the rat ate the poison to death would diminish the levels in the rat. Most animals that die from secondary poisoning are ones that feed on a lot of rats/ mice as a primary food source. Not the well fed back yard dog that just played w the dead rat. Again it's not impossible just not very likely to be harmful... just gross!!

@Tuckersmom
Thanks I thought it may harm them but wasn't sure. My babies only go out to potty so I shouldn't have too much to worry about

I don't agree with putting out poison because it works it's way up the food chain. No one likes rats, but eagles and owls and bobcats depend on them. So you see one, big deal, they are everywhere.

I usually go to the feedstore in Humble and buy my poisons there and was guaranteed they are safe around other aninals as many of their products are designed to in close proximity to livestock.
