Dave Ward says he was ushered out at KTRK

Dave Ward, the longest-running news anchor in TV history, will be leaving Channel 13 at the end of the year. But he says he is not retiring.

"My contract with Channel 13 expires at the end of this year, and that's when I'll say goodbye," Ward said. "But, no, I am definitely not retiring."

Channel 13 management had invited him to stay with the station through 2017, but he would have been hosting the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Parade and the Freedom Over Texas July 4th fireworks, Ward said.

It was an offer he couldn't accept. "That just didn't interest me at all," he said.

"They took me off the 10 p.m. newscast two years ago. They were taking me off the 6 p.m. news at the end of this year. So I would not have an anchor role anymore."

With no anchor duties, Ward said it was time to leave.

Channel 13 president Henry Florsheim said he still hopes an agreement can be reached for Ward to stay with the station beyond this year.

"Dave is always welcome at the station, and there is always a role for Dave on the air," Florsheim said. "We can't wait to celebrate his 50 years of service with us. I don't know if anybody has ever done that, and we want to celebrate his success."

Ward, 77, joined Channel 13 as a street reporter in 1966. Earlier this year, Guinness World Records honored him "for the longest career as a television news broadcaster."

Ward said he will be free to join another TV station after his current contract expires Dec. 31.

Why, ABC13? I don't understand. What do you think their reason was?

Age? Are they thinking they want younger, more "attractive" anchors? Not sure.

He will be missed! I hope he finds the gig of his lifetime when he leaves ABC13.

In all honestly, I don't care to much for the new faces of broadcasting. It has become a sleaze fest of sorts. I am a fan of Casey Curry but she has been changed around too. The baby may have something to do with it. She and Don Nelson were a great combo and made the mornings fun. Has not been the same since he left.

@Luckysis
I'd say that's it. I'm sorry, but I don't want my news from some 20 year old cheerleader.

When your whole career has been a public personality it's tough to accept changing demographics and ratings . At 77 most people look foreword to enjoying retirement but for an on air personality it takes you out out of the spotlight, and that's hard to accept. I hope he stays on after the first of the year.

I wouldn't doubt it...I've seen trouble brewing with KTRK for a while now, very easy to spot...High turnover there all of a sudden the past couple years...They've become the local leaders in self-promotion and sensationalist "journalism"...The new trend is to create news(ie:ratings whoring) instead of reporting what's happening and I guess the old-timers just don't fit that mold...I grew up watching that station but I had to let it go and switch over to KHOU a couple years ago...Even replaced all my "quick-access" internet news bookmarks on all my devices to KHOU...

I wish they would hire news folks who know Houston and Texas. I think they need to be able to pronounce streets and towns before they can get the job Emoticon

Dave Ward is a good anchor, but some people don't know when to call it quits. Your 77 years old Sir, go enjoy life somewhere and spend it with your family.

KTRK got a new GM in the last year or so and they have slowly been phasing out the old timers. I will miss Dave. I have grown up watching him all my life. Eric Barajas is good and he lives out in this area.

@Happyasalark

I remember his uncle (Mike Barajas) commented on a spot that talked about a church - he said something like "Oh yes, I know that church - we went to a funeral there a week ago and had a great time."

DW looked at each other - had a great time at a funeral? :D
