Man who lost wife to cancer died of 'broken heart' two days late

This happened to my next door neighbors when I was a kid. Little, old, Italian couple. Kids were raised and they stayed almost entirely to themselves. He died on a Tuesday. She died the following Friday. Her family told us she just gave up and pined for him until she died ten days later. She died of a broken heart.

West-Tex : The thing is, you never know how you're going to react to such a devastating loss. I certainly didn't think I would survive, but I did. Imagine feeling like your heart is broken into a million tiny pieces. He was 81 years old, and just couldn't see a way forward. The pain was just too much for him to handle.

I was surprised my BIL lasted 5 months without my sister. He tried but losing her after watching cancer slowly destroy her was too much. I think losing a child is the worst kind of loss and losing a spouse is the next worst.

I have a friend who's parents died within 6 weeks of each other. Husband passed first then the wife. The wife was in the hospital, and the doctors couldn't figure it out. My friend told them it was her heart. They said her heart is fine. Friend said no, its broken. She doesn't want to be here. They brought her to their home, and she passed several weeks later. Really rough for the family members.

How heartbreaking! The same thing happened to my aunt several years ago. Broken heart syndrome is real. The only comfort is they are now reunited in heaven.
