In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, LSC-Kingwood students and the Houston Food Bank have come together to provide relief to hurricane victims. Beginning Wednesday, October 1 and continuing through Tuesday, October 14, LSC-Kingwood students will be collecting canned goods and other non-perishable donations through a campus-wide food drive.

The Houston Food Bank is a private, nonprofit organization leading the fight against hunger. A certified member of Feeding American (formerly America's Second Harvest-The Nation's Food Bank Network, the Houston Food Bank distributed 35 million pounds of food to nearly 400 hunger relief agencies in 18 southeast Texas counties.

The following is a list of items most needed by the programs served by the Houston Food Bank. Please choose plastic containers or canned items rather than glass. In addition to canned goods items such as can openers, personal hygiene items, gift cards and cash are being accepted.

* Protein such as canned tuna or chicken (packed in water), canned stews and pasta/meats that are low in sodium and fat content

* Peanut butter

* Canned fruits in light syrup (tabbed pop tops preferred) and natural applesauce

* 100% juice cans or boxes

* Canned vegetables, tomatoes, tomato sauce

* Soups with meat and/or beans, meal-in-a-can that are low in sodium and fat content

* Cereals and cereal bars

* All types of pasta (spaghetti, macaroni)

* Packages of dry beans

For the safety of those served, the Houston Food Bank is unable to accept open packages, baby food, homemade food items, perishable foods, or items with "expired" dates.

Please be as generous as you can. Families are struggling in our community, now more than ever. And after the hurricane is long gone, the Houston Food Bank will continue to provide help to those who suffer from hunger throughout the year.

Students, staff, faculty and community members are encouraged to drop off donations at any of the collection bins located at the main entrances of each campus building or collections bins located throughout the community. For more information about the student food drive, donation locations, or to make a donation, visit kingwood.lonestar.edu or call 281-312-1679.
