All concerts will be held on the LSC-Kingwood campus in the Student Center/Fine Arts Performing Arts Theatre.

First up, the Kingwood Community Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble Concert, two of LSC-Kingwood’s instrumental performance groups, will perform in concert as part of their musical studies on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. These groups perform a wide variety of music, including Broadway and show tunes, transcriptions of orchestral works and original compositions for band. This concert is free and open to the public. For more information, please call, 281.312.1532.

Next, the Kingwood Big Band takes the stage for two nights, Friday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 24, performing in concert the music of the Big Band era. The band is thrilled to welcome back vocalist Julie Johnson, an audience favorite from the October, 2008 concert. This is the sixth anniversary season for the Kingwood Big Band and they will perform selections chosen from the greatest in American popular music and song – George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, and even a little R&B.  The band is made up of both amateur and professional musicians from the college and community and is led by LSC-Kingwood band director and Dean of Arts and Humanities, James Stubbs.  This popular event starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for senior citizens and $5 for students. For information on this event, contact the Kingwood Musical Arts Society (KMAS) at 281.310.1260 or visit kingwoodbigband.com.

Rounding out this musical series, the Chamber Singers and the Jazz Ensemble will perform for the public, Friday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m. The Chamber Singers are a small vocal ensemble performing sacred and secular chorale literature of various eras including madrigals. Dr. Todd Miller, professor of music at LSC-Kingwood, leads this group and says, “What’s exciting to me about this group is it is all students and as part of their learning, they need to be exposed to a wide variety of musical styles. They perform a variety of choral literature from diverse historical style periods and cultures, it’s a real potpourri.” Styles for this concert will include Renaissance, Contemporary American, Gospel Blues, and Romantic. This concert is free and open to the public. For more information, please call, 281.312.1532.

The music program at LSC-Kingwood offers the Music Field of Study curriculum that allows students to earn an associate of arts degree or to transfer to a university music program. The college also offers private instruction in voice, piano, guitar, strings, percussion, brass, and woodwinds.  Courses that may be used to satisfy the Fine Arts requirement for all degrees are offered as well – Music Fundamentals, Music Appreciation, and American Music. In addition, there is a strong community education track which encourages local community members to participate in music classes and performing ensembles.

Register for credit classes in one of three ways: phone, online or on campus.  Classes are offered days, evenings, or weekends in traditional, Internet, video, TV and independent study formats. Current students can register by telephone at 281-519-6625. Former and current students can register online at LoneStar.edu/registration.
