DD wants to go into education

My DD is accepted to UH and wants to go into education. I have told her that it is a noble job but does not get the respect it deserves when it comes to compensation. She's locked in and that's where her heart is pointing her.

I notice there appear to be a few educators on this board. Can you give some tips on getting the education degree and getting your first job? I hear math and science teachers are in high demand.

@cousindan : Bilingual teachers are in high demand as well.

Maybe she could try taking Summer jobs working with kids, like the school age kids. It will give her an idea of how crazy they are, she'll be dealing with Gen Alpha. They are Gen X on drugs, Boomers on Steroids. 😳

@cousindan: these days there is such a teacher shortage that she can get a position in any area. The UH student teacher program lasts two semesters which allows student teachers to mature and be very ready for their first classroom. The UH Site Coordinator is frequently a retired school principal with a great deal of real life experience working with new teachers.

Frequently, the school hosting the student teacher will offer the ST a job if they prove reliable and interested in continuously working to become a highly effective teacher. ST can apply to any District they are interested in working in. The District will send email reference checks and school principals may call the references.

I have worked with student teachers for four years. I have never heard that any of my students were unemployed.

The education program is usually a four year degree with student teaching taking place the last year.

I can answer most of the questions you may have relating to UH Student Teaching if you would like more information.

Pros -- rewarding, fun good caring people to work with (usually), summers mostly off (lots of inservice and training required though), a job anywhere you want, a pension, and I think if you teach a certain number of years (?3 or ?5) at a Title school, your college loan gets excused. Not hard to find a good Title school, as it only requires over 50% free/reduced lunch.

Cons -- very demanding, gotta love kids, not as much pay as some other college graduates, can be exhausting, but you learn and grow and gain a ton of various skills including technology, working with parents, time management, ....

I'd say if her heart is in it, she is a good candidate and will be happy with her choice. Lots of openings, so pick the subject matter that is her strength/ her love....whatever she loved in school.

Do any of the subjects pay more than others? The few teachers I have talked to strongly recommend math and science. Good thing is my DD has A's in math and science. She tutors her classmates now.

Bilingual/English as a Second Language - Elementary and Secondary Levels
Special Education - Elementary and Secondary Levels
Career and Technical Education - Secondary Level
Technology Applications and Computer Science - Elementary and Secondary Levels
English Language Arts and Reading - Elementary and Secondary Levels
Mathematics - Secondary Level
Science - Secondary Level

These are the TEA teacher shortage areas

What age of students is she most interested in working with?

I know that in some states, teachers are paid more if they are certified in certain areas. If that is an area you are passionate about, it works. I do not know about extra pay for subject areas in TX.

It is generally accepted that if a teacher wants to rise to a higher level of pay, they need to consider becoming an Assistant Principal or Principal. This is a wonderful path for teachers that want to impact the learning of a whole school.

Another path to higher pay is ongoing education resulting in a Masters or higher degree.

Many teachers are passionate about teaching, consider the summer off as priceless and are satisfied with the pay since they are working in the area they love. Some teachers pick up a job teaching summer school.

Bilingual/English as a Second Language - Elementary and Secondary Levels

@Rosey : Just to kind of interject/piggy back off of this statement. A lot of districts are incorporating Dual Language and Spanish Immersion, so not just ESL, but truly needing teachers that can teach Bilingual classes. NCISD and Humble have Dual Language programs. Lessons are taught in both Spanish and English equally.

Splendora ISD is in need of more of your ESL type teachers. It would really depend on the district. I just wanted to comment on that because a surprising amount of people aren't aware of the many linguistics programs that Texas school districts offer K-12.

My daughter-in-law was a Dual Language teacher. First 2nd grade, then a few years later, 4th grade. Since she has a Master's, she was promoted within the school, then promoted to a District Administrator level at district. If she's going into education, my take-away would be to keep going and get a masters.

@cousindan : I told my kids that there was no such thing as parent orientation back in the day. Told them we had to figure it out, we did, and they would to, so I would not go to orientation. They figured it out. 🙂 that said, I told them I would be there for them, and I was.

@cousindan :
See I don't really want to go. It's two days, I don't want to be driving back after dark the first day and I do not want to have to get a room. You're not even with them most of the time anyway. Plus it's an extra $50 for me to go. My mom will try to make me feel bad about it but whatever.
I have absolutely no idea how she's going to be getting to classes though. She better familiarize herself with the bus. 😂
