Dynamo Dash Youth Club wrapped up its 9th annual Breast Cancer Awareness campaign last weekend with a player education session at Lents Family Park, while also recognizing the volunteers, parents, players and coaching staff that made the program such a success during a challenging year.

A check was presented for $10,000 to the Memorial Hermann Foundation working alongside In The Pink of Health, which is celebrating its 20th year of building awareness and raising funds for breast cancer research. The program events were sponsored by Hunter Family Orthodontics.

"The commitment of these young athletes towards helping those struggling with ovarian and breast cancer is truly amazing," said In the Pink of Health co-chairs Dee Gelsomini & Debra Cooper. “Statistics show that many of these young women will be faced with a loved one battling these diseases in their lifetime and it is so encouraging to witness their compassion and support at such a young age. We are all in this together and we are so grateful for this continued partnership with the Houston Dynamo | Dash.”

“It is such an honor and a privilege to be a part of the Breast Cancer Awareness campaign with the Dynamo | Dash Youth Soccer Club,” said Dr. Ross Hunter of Hunter Family Orthodontics. “They do a fantastic job of raising awareness throughout the month of October in our community. My mother is fortunately a breast cancer survivor, so it brings me great joy to see all the pink shirts being worn by the athletes, knowing that some of the proceeds go towards finding a cure!”

The fundraising initiative began in 2012 to strengthen the Girls Academy by offsetting annual program costs while also providing support for a local charity. In addition to building great players, our club also aims to build great people by teaching our Service core value through projects such as this that raise awareness and donations for a worthy cause.

"The breast cancer awareness campaign that Dash is a part of is important to me because we are showing support to the many affected by breast cancer,” said Girls Academy player Danielle Shannon. “We as a club want to do our part and raise awareness to help find a cure."

"Breast cancer affects so many people including members of our family, our club, and our good friends,” said committee member and parent Trina Engels. “I love that Dynamo | Dash young athletes are not only being taught to be aware of the illness but how they can help and serve others through their fundraising efforts. This year was especially hard for all non-profit organizations and it is very satisfying to know how much their efforts will be appreciated by so many women who can't afford treatment."

The club would like to recognize all of our internal committee members who helped our players make this program a success: Yessenia Pirir (The Woodlands), Trina Engels (The Woodlands), Michelle Gionnatti (The Woodlands), Fran Shannon (Kingwood), Darien Morgan (South), Emily Faircloth (Beaumont) and Brooke Gemmell (graphic design).
