The numbers are in! This year, the Lake Houston Family YMCA
had a big goal of serving 2,000 children through its annual school
supplies drive YMCA Operation Backpack. Thanks to overwhelming support
from individuals and businesses throughout the Lake Houston area,
children in need will have the school supplies needed to start the year
off right.
“The Lake Houston YMCA takes great pride in sharing this success with
the community,” said Executive Director Chris Butsch, “Our goal of
serving 2,000 seemed ambitious, but the generosity of our community was
bigger. We are glad that we were able to exceed this number and ensure
our youth were able to start the year with the supplies they needed.”
YMCA Operation Backpack, one of the largest back-to-school supply
drives in Texas, has been a year over year success as part of YMCA of
Greater Houston’s commitment to improve academic achievement. Last year,
YMCA Operation Backpack delivered backpacks and school supplies to more
than 120,000 children in Houston and surrounding areas. The Lake
Houston Family YMCA distributed over 1,800 to Humble ISD alone in 2018.
City-wide partners of YMCA Operation Backpack are
ABC13/KTRK-TV, 89.3 KSBJ and H-E-B. Sponsors include The Home Depot,
Kidde, CITGO, Honda and Ashley HomeStore.
