Fields Family Dedicates Fourth Funeral Home - Striking Atascocita Site Includes Separate Community Room

Area religious and political leaders joined the Fields Family on September 28 to celebrate the completion of their newest funeral home, the Rosewood Funeral Home Atascocita.

“What you see here today, this beautiful building, has truly been a labor of love,” Jess Fields Sr. told more than 300 guests seated in the Atascocita chapel. “It’s also been a labor of sweat and tears. We thought we were going to hold this ribbon cutting almost nine months ago. Obviously, that didn’t happen, but that’s all behind us now.”

Rosewood Atascocita is located on 4.5 acres at Lake Houston Parkway. In addition to ample parking, the facility has numerous family and gathering rooms decorated in marble, beautiful chandeliers, comfortable furniture, fireplaces and eye-catching original paintings. A spectacular waterworks is featured behind the main building.

Guests entered the expansive and striking two-story reception area which features a graceful stairway to the second level. The ceremony was conducted in the serene 300-seat chapel while the reception took place in the community room, a totally separate building that can host dinners, receptions and fully-catered funeral-related or non-funeral-related activities.

“What you see here is the culmination of all the attributes and qualities my family has learned after serving our Lake Houston community for so many years,” Fields said.

Rosewood Funeral Home is one of the few family-owned funeral businesses in Texas. It was created in 1927 near Humble from a pasture full of trees and rose bushes by the grandparents of Jess Fields. His parents, Jack Fields Senior and Jessie Faye Fields, took over the business in 1948, building it into the beautiful, perpetual care cemetery it is today.

The Rosewood Funeral Home family includes four funeral homes in Humble, Porter, Pasadena and now Atascocita, two cemeteries and a crematory.

“My parents were Godly people,” Jess recalls. “They worked hard building this business when times were very difficult, but that helped me understand the principles of hard work, honesty and integrity. Dad was involved in building this community with no financial gain in mind. I always admired this about my Father.”

Jess Fields Senior is the third-generation owner of Rosewood and, joining him for the dedication celebration, was Jess Fields Junior, the fourth generation of the Fields family.

Cadets with the Summer Creek High School Junior ROTC program, under the command of Major Ricky Parker and First Sgt. Lanetia Valcin, presented the Colors. Students of the Summer Creek High School Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Kyle Davis provided music.

Representing the religious community were Rabbi Dan Gordon of Temple Beth Torah, Pastor Nathan Lino of Northeast Houston Baptist Church, Reverend Deborah Proctor of Atascocita United Methodist Church, and Father Tony Udo of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Humble.

Pastor Brett Jones of Grace Church presented a stirring rendition of “Amazing Grace.”

Elected officials who participated included Kim Brode for Congressman Ted Poe, Houston City Council Member Dave Martin who presented a proclamation from Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner who declared September 28 as Rosewood Atascocita Day in Houston, State Representative Dan Huberty and Humble Mayor Merle Aaron.

The Fields Family also received a special commendation from Gene Allen of the Texas Funeral Directors Association.

Members of the Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce and the Greater East Montgomery County Chamber “cut” ribbons to celebrate the official opening of the Atascocita location.

Following the program and ribbon cuttings, a reception was held in the Atascocita facility’s community room, a totally separate building located next to the funeral home that can host funeral-related or non-funeral-related activities.

Guests toured the Atascocita Flower Shop, located in the main building, which provides beautiful flower arrangements for all occasions as well as greeting cards and gifts.

“Atascocita is one of the fastest growing areas in the country and the population has doubled in the last 10 years,” said Fields. “This is a great place to live, work and worship. It’s a natural place for us.”

Reflecting on the future, Jess Fields Senior is very content with the Rosewood heritage while developing his current four properties.

“There will be some remodeling of our other locations. You have to continue to maintain and strive to get better,” Fields admits. “Now, we are building a state-of-the-art cremation garden at Rosewood Humble. It is gorgeous – a meandering waterway with water features over a 2 ½ acre garden. It is called the Garden of Fountains and it is strictly for cremations.”

Fields confesses that funeral homes and cemeteries are not always depicted accurately or in the most positive light.

“I assure you, Rosewood is operated in a professional business environment, for our employees and for the families we serve,” he says. “Rosewood truly is a ministry and we help families celebrate the life of their loved one. We assist families in making these decisions in a most difficult time and we provide encouragement with love.”
