As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, this week we sat down with Dr. Mike Kesner of Made Ya Smile Dental.

Tell us a bit about your business: What does your business offer, and how long have you been around?
My name is Dr. Mike Kesner. I started Made Ya Smile Dental back 32 years ago in Sugar Land, which is where I grew up. I wanted to create a place that provided comfortable and affordable dental care for all Houstonians. So in the last several years I expanded the Made Ya Smile name across 12 locations surrounding the Houston area. It is small town dental care with big city flare. We provide dental care for the whole family. We offer all phases of dentistry from cleanings, to crowns, to wisdom teeth removal, to braces, to cosmetic dentistry, to implants. General dentists plus an oral surgeon, gum specialist, root canal specialist, orthodontist, and prosthodontist allow our patients to get everything done in one place.

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started?
I wanted to be a dentist ever since I was in 6th grade at Dulles Junior High School in Sugar Land. I also wanted a career where I could help people, and I always had an artistic side with woodworking and building furniture. So dentistry encompassed both of those things.

Before I started the multiple office expansion, I spend 10 years on the mission field in Guatemala and Honduras taking medical and dental teams from the United States to provide healthcare to the poor.

Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?

We go through an intensive training process with our doctors and our staff to create an excellent patient experience. I always hated going to a dental or medical office where I had to wait too long, be treated like a number, and then charged too much. I decided to run my offices where people are treated as individuals, listened to, charged a fair fee and we take their insurance.

What is your favorite part of running this business?
We love helping people have a beautiful smile with cosmetic Lumineers. They cost less than regular veneers and they are painless. No shots or grinding down your teeth like regular veneers. I have Lumineers on my teeth, as do most of my other doctors. That’s how much we like them. I also teach cosmetic Lumineer seminars to other dentists around the country.
