@eighteen : for some cases, it is genetic, but scientists tell us in 90% of cases it is lifestyle. The rise is type 2 diabetes is avoidable.

BusyMommy : It's not totally preventable. Some of it has to do with genetics which is the case in my family and some people are born with a poor pancreas. Some of us have to live with the cards we're dealt with and hope to keep the disease at bay/controlled for as long as possible before we start losing limbs, eyesight, or die of heart disease. Let's not forget metabolism slows as people age. Guess I ought to become anorexic so my future of diabetes is 100% preventable.

@eighteen : We have been through this on here before. Some people just haven't a clue. Stay healthy, I have a 50/50 chance of getting either Diabetes or Hypoglycemia, already have the heart disease.

" A new review of 24 studies concludes that nutrition is inadequately incorporated into medical education and that that medical students lack the knowledge and skills to provide nutritional care to patients."

@M1cha3lo0o : What does that have to do with my genetics? When I say clueless people I am talking about those that don't understand that Diabetes is not always preventable. My Dad was diet controlled, my Mom's his later in life and they had to put her straight onto insulin as many of my other family members were. It just depends which type shows up in you. I am the only Grandchild of 7 that leans towards Hypoglycemia. All the rest show symptoms or have already been diagnosed with Diabetes

The bad thing is our own Government has given the public plenty of harmful guidelines. "Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable by taking several simple steps: keeping weight under control, exercising more, eating a healthy diet, and not smoking." www.hsph.harvard.edu /nutritionsource/dis ease-prevention/diab etes-prevention

@M1cha3lo0o : Yes but that's only Type 2

It has been proven that if men are fat and out of shape they actually make worse kids then if they were healthy and in shape. The gene expression in the DNA in a man's sperm actually changes.

@M1cha3lo0o : Being fat has very little to do with Diabetes. I know many who have it that are very thin.

M1cha3lo0o : This is not true. I come from a long line of Type 2 diabetics My grandmother died from complications with diabetes. I'm in the "recent rise of diabetes" numbers. I'm not fat. I have a healthy BMI and BF%. I workout. I've had to completely change my diet, which wasn't easy, because I already eat pretty healthy. Been an athlete pretty much my entire life. I have a crappy pancreas that isn't working like it used to. I basically have to practice 16:8 (working towards 20:4) IF on a daily basis to give my pancreas a better chance at working like it's supposed to. If I'm unable to I have to start taking some kind of medicine to help and it's not looking good. This is all still pretty new for me, so it's a bit frustrating to see y'all talking about it as if it's something that can be controlled. It's a bit frustrating when I have to be picky with a food order and ingredients and people give me dirty looks, or tell me how they did the dieting thing in their 20s. It's a bit frustrating to see people bigger than me stuff their faces freely without a care in the world. My freedom of choice over food has been stripped from me and I can assure you it's genetics.

@eighteen : What I will see in my future. Trying hard to get a new outlook but the future no matter what you do can be very grim. Praying for you to get through it.

@chasinghosts : correct type 1 is 100% genetic.
Where type 2 is around 10% genetic.

It is sad watching someone let themselves wither away and refuse to change their life style. 😥

@chasinghosts : I might have assumed wrong on what you meant. There are people who have real genetic issues with their insulin sensitivity. There are a larger group of people that are destroying their bodies through poor diet whole listening do doctor give outdated and even wholly disproven diet advice.
After the last decade in cellular biology any Doctor who hasn't been back to school in the last decade is still sharing "made up" advice from observing and questioning people instead of studying the actual cells.

Sadly almost everything in a box in grocery stores needs burned and fast food places need shut down.
That would be the healthiest change America could make.

@chasinghosts : What I was saying is how people treat their body ( including those people *not everyone* who has let them selves become obese and ruined their insulin sensitivity) by being fat changes the expression of the DNA you pass on to your children.
But, Yes plenty of skinny people can have messed up insulin sensitivity.

Their are a large number of the population that are eating trash and living poor lifestyles that are basically giving themselves diabetes type 2.

Not to be confused with the smaller amount of people truly born with a genetic issue.

@M1cha3lo0o :

The risk factors for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes are similar. They include:

being overweight
a family history of diabetes
having a high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level lower than 40 mg/dL or 50 mg/dL
a history of high blood pressure
having gestational diabetes or giving birth to a child with a birth weight of more than 9 pounds
a history of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
being of African-American, Native American, Latin American, or Asian-Pacific Islander descent
being more than 45 years of age
having a sedentary lifestyle
