Tips for Safe Shopping during Tax Free Weekend

Loading Image...

It's time for the annual Sales Tax-Free weekend!

The Comptroller encourages all taxpayers to support Texas businesses while saving money on tax-free purchases of most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks (sold for less than $100) during the annual Tax-Free weekend. Qualifying items can be purchased tax free from a Texas store or from an online or catalog seller doing business in Texas. In most cases, you do not need to give the seller an exemption certificate to buy qualifying items tax free.

Information on which items are included can be found here: comptroller.texas.go v/taxes/publications /98-490/

Some safety tips from Harris County Constable Mark Herman:

1. Have a plan before you head out to shop.

2. Be vigilant, don’t be an easy target. Lock your vehicle, take your keys with you and hide your belongings.

3. Park in well lit areas and travel in numbers.

4. Keep an eye on young children, especially in the parking lots.

5. Have your keys in your hand when you go to your vehicle and try to limit the numbers of items you have in your hands.

Good luck to everyone out there. It's terrible they have to issue a warning now just to go school shopping

It's different trying to shop for school supplies for a middle school student until classes start and teachers lists come out. I'm going to buy some basic supplies, the backpack & some seasonal clothes and be done until we get specific needs lists. Going to avoid anything more this weekend. Grade school was much easier with early lists provided. Stay cool 😎

@M1cha3lo0o : Yes. All these clothes this weekend will be on sale next weekend for much cheaper than 8.4 % off or whatever the tax rate is

I plan to go to the grocery tomorrow morning early and then stay out of retail stores until Monday. I think it's a good plan!

@Kemibe : I feel ya! Kind of don't miss those days. I do sometimes,. But I really started enjoying the empty nest after the initial adjustment. It kind of killed me when my youngest kid went to college. But after a while, I was like., um, yeah, this is pretty nice after all. Emoticon
