Deputy Kareem Atkins honored
Multiple agencies joined together in a law enforcement procession for fallen Constable Deputy Kareem Atkins on Sunday 10/17/21.
Deputy Kareem Atkins was killed early Saturday morning 10/16/21 while working extra law enforcement duties with 2 other deputies at a business in the 4400 block of the North Freeway.
A suspect opened fire on the deputies with an AR-15 assault rifle.
Atkins died from his gun shot injuries. Deputy Atkins was a father of two and had recently returned back to work after paternity leave. He leaves behind a wife, 2 year old and 6 month old baby.
The two other deputies were also shot and injured. Deputy Darrell Garrett was shot in the back and underwent surgery. Upon hearing the gunshots in the parking lot, Deputy Juqaim Barthen rushed to the parking lot to aid his fellow deputies. He too was immediately shot and immobilized.
The investigation is still underway and authorities hope to have a suspect in custody soon.
