All I can say is, good luck to the district. $13.00 an hour for a degreed professional to be exposed to Covid on a daily basis and to put up with unruly, disrespectful children that I cannot reprimand or discipline...no thanks.

Well we all know that substitute "teaching" is nothing more than babysitting the kids till the teacher comes back! LOL.

@Cbear : And, the kids know it. Elementary schoolers act up because their routine is disrupted. Middle and high schoolers act out trying to be the cool ones. The poor substitutes are abused.

But, if all they wanted were babysitters, they wouldn't be trying to recruit those with bachelor degrees and teacher certifications

@Sammee : I think they are just trying to make it look a little more professional. Can't really advertise for "babysitters" for public school. Although it would be funny!!

@Cbear : Some local districts take just about anybody, no education required....

@Sammee : Yep. Tried it once. The kids acted just as you stated above. Never again. I'm not cut out for it.

@Sammee : I think it would be hard to get a last minute notice to come in. Then ....you feel clueless even if the teacher left good notes. Not for me.

@seegee : I don't blame you at all. I, myself, ..... well ..... I'm way too "mean" and have expectations of good behavior. There are a lot of very good children out there, but then there are always those who want to "shake it up a bit" and misbehave. I would be in trouble for nipping it in the bud. It is NOT fair to the other children who truly want to learn when the few disrupt everything. NO, the district would not like me. I have always been strict with my own. I'm not going to be any different for other people's children when they are in my charge.

I also find it interesting how they are calling them "guest teachers". Why do we continue to change the perfectly good and familiar names of things to be politically correct or more polite? Ugh.

@seegee : Me, either. I learned that from volunteering in elementary. Some of those kids had terrible behavior and zero respect for authority. Prior to that, I had seriously considered substituting.

@Cbear : A lot of subs really try to teach when they go in but the kids can get really bad. It's not that they don't want to teach, some kids just don't allow it.

@Cbear : Probably to keep them from thinking they're permanent hires which they would have to pay benefits to.

I subbed a few after my husband died, because I wanted days off. However I subbed mainly at my kids schools and knew most of the kids so they did not try me! A few did and the other kids stopped them! I was called and asked for all the time. But now I know none of the kids....NO thanks.
