Kingwood High School recently commemorated the two-year anniversary of Harvey with a special gift to Summer Creek High School for sharing their campus after floodwaters closed KHS.

On August 30, Kingwood students presented a bronzed bulldog statue and a plaque to Summer Creek students for their campus. The bulldog is the Summer Creek mascot.

"The Kingwood High School student body is very grateful for the efforts that took place two years ago," Trey Kraemer, Humble ISD Assistant Superintendent for High Schools, said.

Kingwood High School students and staff said they felt devastated when they first heard that their school had flooded. More than five feet of water came into Kingwood High.

"There was so much uncertainty; we didn't know if we would ever return," Xomie Sukach, Kingwood High School Student Body President, remembered.

Humble ISD announced a plan that kept academics and extracurricular activities in place while Kingwood High School was restored. Kingwood students and staff shared a campus with Summer Creek High School for the first six-and-a-half months of the 2017-2018 school year. In March 2018, restoration had progressed to a point where classes could return to the Kingwood campus.

"Giving the statue to Summer Creek was the best way to show our appreciation," Sukach said.

Summer Creek students were proud to help in a time of need.

"Opening our campus to Kingwood students was the best way we could help," Andrew Guevara, Summer Creek senior and Student Body Vice President, said.

Brent McDonald, Principal of Summer Creek High School, expressed his appreciation for the bronzed mascot.

"We have a perfect place at our school right at the entrance for this bulldog," he said.

Humble ISD Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Fagen, Assistant Superintendent Trey Kraemer, Kingwood Principal Dr. Michael Nasra, and Summer Creek Principal Brent McDonald joined Kingwood and Summer Creek students for the presentation.
