Humble ISD officials broke ground on August 22 for Elementary School #29 that is being built off of West Lake Houston Parkway.

The new school will help accommodate Humble ISD's rapid growth. "It's a fast-growing school district where so many families want to have their children," Humble ISD Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Fagen said. "We have been constantly building, growing and monitoring enrollment."

The school, designed by Joiner Architects, will incorporate natural light and include areas that allow students to collaborate with each other. The layout is based on a series of pods comprised of classrooms located around a central gathering space for each grade level. The campus will also incorporate enhanced security features.

The one-story building will be 116,450 square feet and will serve students in kindergarten through fifth grade. "This is the next step forward in providing the facilities and opportunities for students and staff that we value," Dr. Fagen said. Gamma Construction was awarded a $28.9 million contract to construct the new school.

The new campus, funded by 2008 bond funds, will be the district's 29th elementary school. It will be named later this school year. Alison Pierce will serve as the school's principal. She has an extensive background in elementary education as a teacher and administrator. "The most rewarding aspect of opening elementary #29 will be meeting new students, families, staff and community members," Pierce said.

@cbp210 : @BusyMommy : Its been on here in the past about a need for a new High School. It was voted down numerous times by parent's committee. District wants it (and already has land designated) but I guess they have some leverage.

@ParksideRes : yep, very sad for the students who don't want to be in a mega school.

@ParksideRes :

It is stuff like this that causes me to lose faith in their district. All my kids go to private school even though my son goes to Timber part time on certain days.

@ParksideRes : District didn't want it. They said up front, it was unnecessary. That schools were near peak and would begin falling in enrollment making another high school unnecessary over time. They persuaded the parent group with the data and their influence.

@HumbleGirl : so the district believes the new development s won't being students? Okay. Then they need to balance out the schools, not create one mega school.

@BusyMommy : From what Im getting from it all is that there is a community committee that has power to veto district construction plans. The district wants the high school but the committee wanted to just do portables and temp classrooms at current schools. Also same thing happened to elementary schools. District wanted to enclose the open gyms to use them more for PE and recess when too hot. Committee vetoed that too.
Overcrowding is known but the committee won't agree. I believe the formation of it was tied to the 2008 bond program.

@ParksideRes : I can't see that thread, must be owned by someone ignoring me. I served on the bond committee, where we voted on the final disposition of the bond funds, and that's when reps of the district said as I described.
