July 4th is the second-most-deadly holiday period of the year, just behind New Year's, due to impaired driving. Drunk driving is a serious crime. If you're caught, they will place you under arrest. No exceptions. No excuses. Much of the tragedy that comes from impaired-driving related crashes could be prevented if everyone would take a few simple precautions before going out to party this 4th of July.

Constable Mark Herman's office is prepared for the 2019 4th of July. His staff has coordinated Constable Patrols that will be focused on communities throughout Precinct 4. In addition, his team will have DWI STEP Patrols on the streets looking for impaired drivers.

Always follow these tips for a safer July 4th celebration:

-Whenever you plan on drinking alcohol, designate your sober driver before going out and give that person your keys.

-If you're impaired, call a cab, use mass transit or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.

-Promptly report drunk drivers you see on the roadways to law enforcement.

-Wearing your safety belt or using protective gear on your motorcycle is your best defense against an impaired driver.

-And remember, Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk. If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

Have a safe and prosperous July 4th!

Thank you Constable Herman. Unfortunately, selfish drunk drivers don't care and don't heed advice.

You know, if the cops out here really cared, they would sit outside bars on weekends and nab the drivers stumbling to their cars before they get in them. I work next to a bar, I literally watch like 10 people a night drunk af drive off. Common thing I see, people hitting curbs and people swerving. I do not understand why there aren't more cops doing anything about it. I almost got run off the road not too long ago by a drunk just trying to get home from work.

@Mandabunni : Because that's against the law.
