Humble ISD invites the community to celebrate the district's 100th anniversary at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Turner Stadium, 1700 Wilson Road in Humble. The free program, entitled "Humble ISD: 100 Years in the Making," features speakers, historical information, musical performances and fireworks.

Joel Osteen, senior pastor of Lakewood Church and the author of 11 national bestselling books, will share memories of growing up in Humble ISD. A 1981 graduate of Humble High School, Osteen's weekly televised services attract more than 10 million viewers in the United States plus millions more in 100 nations around the world.

Musical entertainment will be provided by Gary Kyle and The Kin. Kyle graduated from Kingwood High School in 1995. His career has allowed him the opportunity to share the musical stage with country music legends Tanya Tucker and John Michael Montgomery. On Feb.16, Humble ISD students will join Gary Kyle and The Kin in special performances.

The evening will conclude with a fireworks show. Admission and parking are free. Seating will be first come, first served. There are no tickets. No concessions will be sold at the event. Gates open at 4 p.m. The evening is made possible by sponsors Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit Union, Balfour Dilly Letter Jackets, and the Humble ISD Education Foundation.

On Feb. 18, 1919, the Texas Legislature created Humble ISD. Prior to the existence of Humble ISD, students were educated by Harris County Common School Districts No. 28, 35 and 50. There were 1,425 students in Humble ISD during the 1918-1919 school year. This year, Humble ISD serves more than 43,500 students. The district has been celebrating its Centennial throughout the 2018-2019 school year with a variety of events. Extensive historical information can be found at www.humbleisd.net/hi story

I loved the slide show with all the kids from present and past. Saw my kid go by at least once. Looked for my own self in the older shots.

Fantastic and very lengthy fireworks.

The rain held off just long enough. Good job Humble ISD.

Nobody else went? I will say the crowd was smaller than I expected.

I hope they put out the slide show that was played.

Sad that they really let the news out too late and not too many knew about this. Should have been a much bigger much better event. Sorry to have missed it but knew nothing till after the fireworks.

@chasinghosts : I felt like I saw it everywhere. Several times in my Facebook feed, several tweets, multiple emails from the middle school, the high school, and the district - several over at least 3 weeks. Posted here. Posted in The Observer. Goodness, where else could it have been posted?

I think everyone hears enough Joel Osteen on Sundays. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Fireworks seemed pretty cool though.

@Blackhorse77 : Joel was 10 minutes tops at the very beginning. It lasted an hour and a half. We heard more from State Rep Huberty, Mayor Aaron, Dr Fagan, and other school board members as well as slide shows and a band.

@HumbleGirl : I said that because it wasn't just for current student families. I don't ever see tweets from anything about this area, no kids in schools here and don't get the Observer. There are alot of people who no longer have kids in school that might have wanted to go. Some people don't use Social Media, or use is sparingly. I would have at least put a few banners up in the area, maybe said something for the news to announce or maybe post it on Atascocita.com in FB. Noone on my street knew what was going on. Several have kids in the district, but they are all younger. Not sure why they didn't make much effort, but no food, no people. My niece's went there, live in Kingwood and didn't hear a thing. Maybe I would have seen it on here if people talked about it on the post. Kinda obvious it wasn't too important to too many since we're still on page one. Emoticon

@chasinghosts : Banners and bandit signs get picked up by someone on here, even if school related.

I think you can sign up for email alerts through the district without students. There is a lot of community info that comes from the district that isn't directly school related.

@HumbleGirl : Had no idea. Banners across tops of poles don't though. Good to know we can sign up for info at the district too. Thanks!

Try emailing [email protected] to see what it takes to subscribe. I couldn't find anything on the district site. I did see an app and social media links but not email.

@HumbleGirl : We saw tons of reminders and ads from everywhere. Didn`t go for fear of overcrowding. Sad to see your pics of empty bleachers. Would have went for sure. HHS Band Grad.
