According to info sent out by the Army Corps of Engineers in Galveston, dredging will begin as early as today (9/19) on the San Jacinto River.

"I'm happy to announce that after several weather delays and some mechanical delays earlier this week, that dredges are in the water and dredging should begin later this afternoon. The Galveston District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is conducting this project and it is expected to continue through the end of April 2019." ~ Councilman Dave Martin

Mark Williford, Lieutenant Colonel of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Galveston District, said that they're doing everything in their power to start today.

"It's actually amazing how fast this has happened," said Williford. "Usually a project of this size takes YEARS to get off the ground. The representatives in the area have done great work to get this going in a very efficient manner."

Williford added that the Army Corps of Engineers and emergency personnel are urging boaters to be very careful when traveling near the dredging equipment, or to not get close to it at all. It's very dangerous and the last thing they want to happen is for someone to get hurt...or worse.

The dredge is located at the West Fork of the San Jac where it empties into Lake Houston. They'll be dredging about 2.25 miles from the opening of the Lake headed west.

Am I correct in understanding that all the dredged material goes through an underwater pipeline to one of two deposition areas? Thats what it looks like from that diagram. It seems like that would easily get clogged with debris.

The map has Atascocita spelled wrong. It's a shame the dredging isn't happening across Atascocita Point down to around the Walden area. There has been sand increases there as well

@houtexas : I believe I read that the lake falls under City of Houston jurisdiction to fund the dredging, which some have been trying to get done the past 25 years, to no avail. I'll try to find the article that I read and post it. In a nutshell, it didn't sound like it was going to happen anytime in the next couple of decades.

The lake proper dredging or a portion thereof is funded in the flood bonds.

@Smokeybear : So, they are going to dredge the lake, too? That would be wonderful!
