George Carlin - Political Correctness

This is a skit the late comedian George Carlin did regarding political correctness when it comes to modern verbiage. Some will agree with his assertions while others will disagree and say that things needed to change in reference to labels.

Either way what it does demonstrate is how our society has evolved in what is considered acceptable.

@rocket : LOL yep so true. Now you have to walk around on egg shells all the time trying not to offend someone. Sad but true. Thank you for posting this though. I needed a good laugh.

@Weathergirl5 : I don't walk on eggshells. The PC crowd is viciously on the defensive, ready to scream "I'm offended!" over any little thing.
Remember the woman who cried "racism" when she saw a floral decoration with cotton bolls? That was the last straw for me!
I picked cotton too, so what's the big deal? I know that whiney woman had never picked cotton, and the 3 generations before her were never forced to pick cotton. We were grateful to pick cotton and earn a living.
The PC crowd knows they will get their 15 minutes of fame with our lame media and social media, maybe even more than 15 minutes.

@ChloeW : I don't like to walk around on eggshells either, but sometimes I have to. For example work is a great situation. Always got to be careful not to offend someone or for them to take it the wrong way. I'd rather walk around on eggshells at work then be accused of something.

My two cents is this trend has to do with people feeling certain terms or labels serve to marginalize them. For example for decades people (primarily women) that did administrative work for high level executives were called secretaries. Some people began to resent that title as being demeaning and not representative of the duties and responsibilities that came with the job. Thus came the evolution of terminology that ultimately led to a new title - executive assistant.

Did the job materially change from what it had been? Probably not. But the new title made people feel better about themselves. And at the end of the day that's what most of the change in labeling is about. People feeling better about themselves or using language to soften a harsh reality. So drug addicts (or junkies as they used to be called) morphed into substance abusers, garbage collectors were relabeled as sanitation workers and so on....

I have a buddy that insist that prostitutes should come under the social worker banner. I told him yeah good luck with that. Emoticon
