A 9-year-old is facing five counts of murder. He didn't even know what 'alleged' meant.

@Ryboo : I know... by reading the story, he didn't understand most of what the judge was telling him. I don't know the details of the fire, and I do know at that age you should know starting a fire is bad, but I'm sure he had no idea of the tragic effect his actions would have. I don't know if murder is the right charge here, although if he is convicted, " he could face a maximum sentence of probation, along with counseling or treatment. Under Illinois law, 10 is the minimum age children can be sent to detention, and 13 is the minimum age at which they can be imprisoned."

Also this- "Alwood, the boy's mother, told CBS News this month that her son had recently been diagnosed with a form of schizophrenia, ADHD and bipolar disorder. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services reportedly took him into custody shortly after the fire, and he is now a ward of the state."

@Floyd : Probably can't conceive what "forever" means either. At that age, I remember pretending a lot........my brother and I drove my parents crazy pretending if you did this - what would happen. Children playing--never considered "forever".

My heart hurts for the 5 people murdered. This kid has got one long hard life ahead.

Prayers for everyone affected by this sad tragedy.

Sorry Carol as I don't agree with you there. People need to raise their children and teach them right and wrong, staying on their butt every step of the way. It's called being a parent. Tired of watching how kids act up and their parents allow it. If you can't do your job of being a parent, don't have any kids...(sorry for the rant but feel better)

So the worst that can happen to him, if he is convicted of 5 counts of murder, is probation. That is hardly ruining his life, as the mother states. The sociopath will be free to walk amongst us. I'm sure we'll be seeing him in the news in the future for committing heinous crimes.

@Sammee : I'm fearing the same thing. They can't even formally diagnose him as such until he is 18. My heart goes out to his mother. She's in a very difficult position.

I feel for the mom but I say lock him up get him help psychological help becuz if he is just going to have probation God forbid he doesnt try to kill someone else. Dont know what wrong with kids these days. Sometimes some cases some parents dont care about their kids I dont know about this case but then u have kids you try to raise right and they still make bad decisions. It's a shame. Gotta pray for this upcoming generation. Not looking good☹
