They passed a religious freedom law saying that religious beliefs can be a reason to not serve someone.

I don't think its as bad as some are making it out to be. But there is potential for people/businesses to use these laws to push the legal limits of discrimination. Personally I think a bunch of states are butt hurt over their gay marriage bans getting over turned and are trying to find some way to save face. And I can't wait until some Muslim ran business uses one of these laws to turn away a Christian or Jewish customer. Gonna be fun to watch.

Companies and organizations are already pulling out of deals and speaking out. I saw the NCAA, Charles Barkley, Angie's List and others were criticizing it.

People criticizing it doesn't mean anything to me. Any strong stand will bring criticism, even the right stand.

If the chronically offended could stop being hypersensitive about everything, stuff like this wouldn't happen.

The Governor signed the bill knowing many business people will leave Indianapolis. I have strong ties to Indiana and was thinking of buying a house there for the summers but not any more. Who wants to go backwards?

@ladybeachbum What's sad is they even have to have legislation making it okay for people to choose to not participate in activities they feel violate their beliefs. Why should a Christian business owner be forced to participate in a homosexual civil union by baking a cake or providing a banquet hall, when they feel by participating, they are condoning the actions. Would you expect a homosexual business owner to say, print out posters or pamphlets for the Westboro Baptist Church? No, you wouldn't. So why can't Christians who believe as I stated above get that same consideration?

Bravo! Excellent analogy! They've started down a slippery slope since wanting to take Christ out of Christmas because some group found it offensive!
We've become numb to our rights being stripped away by special interest groups! They do it slowly, like hair growing. I know you were just making an analogy, but I bet you've offended dozens.

I agree that in your example that should be ok. The business should be able to not provide said service for the wedding. However I believe that the rejected couple should have the right to get on websites like Yelp and let it be known why they were refused service which could potentially hurt the business.

My worry is how these are written. Are they broad enough that an apartment complex can deny a gay couple a place to rent? What about restaurants? Are we essentially allowing businesses to do to gay people what they did to black people 60years ago?

I agree that no person should be discriminated against for ANY reason. That being said, why were we asked to remove the words under God fom our Pledge of Allegiance? My facts may be off, but I believe Muslim holy hours or prayer hours are still rang out in certain universities and communities? Is that not equally offensive? It is to me! But I don't try to change it, it's part of their culture. I don't know how many times I've heard an atheist lash out against Catholicism! Again, their freedom to do so!
We live in a free market where I don't believe discrimination will stand in a business setting. Somebody will cater to that party and reap the rewards! Simple supply and demand!
Why all the euphemisms for our race, cultures or ethnic backgrounds? Some are white, some black, some brown, etc. Own it! Hell, I'm a dumb pollack!

Go to New York and you will see plenty of that. Muslim vendors are already barring Jewish people from entering their businesses and what does the City do? Nothing. !

Actually, I'm from New York originally. You can't make a law for ignorance. There are also much richer Jewish communities that I'm sure do the same, but the reality is that they probably don't want each other's business for obvious reasons! So be it, missed opportunity for them, but someone else WILL capitalize on it, and good for them!

New York also has a ridiculous smoking ban, aren't the smokers being discriminated against? In a free market, smoke-free restaurants would make a killing if desired by the patrons. Also though, the same applies to the smoking establishments, it should be the owners discretion as to which market is more profitable to them, NOT governments!!!!!

Free Enterprise is the ideal system, if left to work. The market should dictate the winners and losers, always.

If a bakery doesnt want to do gay wedding cakes, leave them alone. If a muslim doesnt want to buy matza balls at the Jewish market, leave them alone. Businesses are already skewed to market their target customer anyway. It works, leave the damn government out, for or against...they will just screw it up.

We are talking Indiana, not NYC. There is no competition for business, this state is vastly rural. I know, my family owns two large farms there and I've spent a good chunk of my life there since I was about 3 or 4. Most businesses have just a single option in each rural area with little overlap. There is no diversity and racism and other discrimination is rampant.

This is a step backwards. Way to go, Indiana.
