I had a couple of friends that converted to salt water back when they were popular. They said it was too much trouble to kept up with and converted back to fresh water. One down side is it creates a corrosive atmosphere around the pool. Anything metal, like pool furniture rusts. I have a pool, but it is fresh.

I have a salt water pool. I think we are starting our 7th season. My experience has been very positive and I haven't had any issues with corrosion or rusting, but to be fair, we don't have a lot of metal in or near the water. We do have pool chairs and tables, all metal, and haven't noticed anything that could be related to too much salt in the environment. We do replace 2 umbrellas every season, but that's mostly because of the sun than the salt (the damage is to the cloth, not the metal parts).

The biggest pro for a salt water pool for me is the lack of smell, especially chlorine... my pool rarely has a smell. I don't have to deal with red eyes or sneezing or other side effects of chlorine.

I can't think of a con, other than cost, but we do use it a lot and have enjoyed it... my DW is in the patio every evening that is not too cold enjoying it... even if she doesn't get in just the sound of the water features relaxes her. I don't do that much, but I do get in the water a lot, most weekends and some evenings.

When we put our pool in...I wanted a beach entry with flagstone and flagstone coping around the pool....but could not do that with salt, since it is corrosive to the stone....so we nixed the salt idea.

@SnoopSister : Not good with flagstone. Several friends have switched back to chlorine.

FWIW, I agree with everything @sandman said. We absolutely love our salt water pool.
As far as stonework, no problem with the salt water as long as you get the stone re-sealed. Our pool is about 7 years old and and the stonework is due for it's for it's first re-seal.

@The Sicilian :

Our coping is travertine and it has held quite well. I resealed it last season and haven't noticed any damage.

saltwater regret. switched back and things are fine after repairs. If you can afford constant repairs salt water is fine.

We're in the construction process. We were on the fence but decided on chlorine. Salt effects to steel and glass made our minds up.

We love our salt water pool. We add a half gallon of acid every Sunday (about $2.50) and salt only once every couple of months ($6.00). We used bull nose bricks rather than travertine and my pool is 8 years old and bricks still look good. Our patio furniture had to be replaced because rusting at the bottom.

@tammyTheRiot :

We spend about $150-200 a year on salt, acid, algae treatment and other chemicals. A friend of mine spends about $50-75 a month on chlorine and other chemicals. I replaced my own salt cell for about $200 and I did that after 5 seasons.

I think the "savings" on a salt water pool can be put towards replacing furniture or other stuff.
