Tree Trimming.

We had our oak trees trimmed back yesterday; hoping for more grass to grow in those areas now. We asked our neighbor if it was ok to have the oak tree that abuts our yard trimmed at the street light because the HOA hasn't trimmed it in a couple of years and the light is all but covered with branches. They agreed.

Then yesterday, when the guys were at our house, their daughter came over and asked how much they would charge to remove the entire tree. (Obviously, we didn't have it trimmed if they are going to remove it)... but look at it. I hate to see something this magnificent be cut down. Her Dad said he is concerned it will break up the slab. I'm pretty sure it's already under the house. It's definitely under our driveway.

What do you guys think about cutting down a tree like this? I know - it's their business, it just hurts me to see it removed. #TreeHugger

I'd be against it but it's not my decision. People can do what they want with their property. On mine, I make lightning strike on a clear day...

@ginx : Yes, I've heard that as well. So, more than likely, their house already has slab damage. It's just so pretty and no telling how old it is. It will totally change the look of their yard. But again - THEIR yard; not mine; I just like to see it.

@WeveBecomeEastHouston : I know. I love the trees as well. We have had a pine removed that was on the other side and always dropping on the roof of our home and our other neighbor; also a sweet gum that was leaning. Those are junk trees to me.

My neighbor has a humongous pine tree that is under my driveway slab and sidewalk. I wish I could remove his tree.

As old as that tree is if it hasn't cracked it already the roots may be deep enough that it may not ever crack it. Roots only come to the surface when they are not getting enough water below

@TheCatsMeow : It is true that the roots run out to the extent of the crown edge. Those are feeder roots, very small roots . From your picture it doesn't look like the tree limbs are hanging over the roofs of it is couldn't be much. I wouldn't suspect much if any slab damage, but as you said it's his tree. A lot of growing investment not to say home value with that tree will be lost.

I agree it's a beautiful tree but it's their tree and they are in the right to make their own decision on it.

Well. It's going down. They found several bird nests. Which I knew they would because I listen to the bird song every morning. That side of my house & my driveway are now in full on sun.

@TheCatsMeow : I think I live in your neighborhood. I also have two beautiful old Oak trees in front of my house. They are very old, from way before our house was built. Yes, our driveway has been repaired a couple of times and we did have foundation repairs to our house. Was it the trees? I don't know, more likely the flooding and the droughts. I personally love my Oak trees and would never consider removing them. They shade the house in the Summer and are beautiful all year. I have tried to imagine the yard without them and just see boring.

Sadly I agreed that it was time to pull the plug.
Sometimes you need to know when to let go. Circle of life 😔
On a Positive note...a thick green yard is on its way. BTW did the tree trimming company do a good job at an reasonable price? I need my Backyard center gum tree Removed. I hate to do it because I need the shade on my house but it's time to let go.

An older long time respected home inspector we use to use said never plant a tree any closer than 20 ft to your home or driveway . I know the roots on an oak tree that feed the tree & get water are only 18 inches down & they spread 4 to 7 times out from the with of the crown of the tree . The 2 massif Oaks that cut our house in the Oaks of Atascocita in 1/2 all we saw was about 3 feet of roots . But I have read the tap roots can be 15 feet or so deep on an Oak . I love trees just not in my yard . I will joyfully pay a higher electric bill . Although we changed all windows out & our bills really dropped . As you all know I've got a mess in my yard now because the neighbors tree fell in our yard .

I wish the HOAs would heed this advice.

@TheCatsMeow : Read your title and thought @lynnsgirl: was decorating already. 😂

Last year, we removed an oak tree and now our Magnolia tree has doubled in size--takes up over half of the yard.
