@FenderBass : As an Italian kid who grew up around some of the most amazing Italian food and cooks just south of Chicago. I highly recommend the Italian sausage at Sprouts. I would never have expected it, but it's the best I've found. Central Market has the second best.
Growing up around an Italian kitchen spoiled me for most Italian food around here, my mom and wife cook together when my mom visits and the combination of my Italian roots and my wifes Mexican ones make for some amazing food! I can attest the the original Carrabas on Kirby is VERY good and the one around here is "OK". Italianos is decent, but I had a bad experience at the 1960 & 59 location that ruined it for me. I like the Atascocita one, and we've had great service, but we did a pick up order and my wife said her Lasagna had a natural gas flavor to it. I could smell it. I'm guessing the warming oven was the culprit.
For the meatballs, our familys secret was to lightly fry them on a pan (they have parmesan cheese in them to keep them moist) before putting them in the sauce for 6 hours.
