2015 Atascocita Murder Still Unsolved

Loading Image...

Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Investigators are urging the public to come forward with any information on the murder of an Atascocita couple that occurred two years ago this week.

On Saturday, 03.07.2015, Don and Reda Rentz were discovered murdered in their home, located in the 6700 block of Pacific Crest Court, in the Kings River Village subdivision, in northeast Harris County.

Don and Reda Rentz were retired and lived alone.

Family members became concerned after not having any contact with the couple after several days.

They were last known to be alive on Thursday afternoon, 02.26.2015. The couple died as the result of blunt force trauma; robbery appears to be the motive for their murders.

It is disturbing when anyone is the victim of violent crime, but it is particularly disturbing when an elderly couple is brutally murdered in their own home.

If you have ANY information regarding the murder of Don and Reda Rentz, please contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit at 713.274.9100

Crime Stoppers will pay up to $5,000 for information leading to the charging and/or arrest of the suspect in this case. Information may be reported by calling 713-222-TIPS (8477) or submitted online at www.crime-stoppers.org. Tips may also be sent via a text message by texting the following: TIP610 plus the information to CRIMES (274637). All tipsters remain anonymous.

I am sorry to say this, but if I had to guess. I would think it was a relative that did this. Was their a life insurance policy? Who was the beneficiary person? Let's start with that person and do DNA test etc. I would imagine the investigators would have some type of DNA of the person that committed this crime. Just trying to help out here.

I'm sure after two years they have been down this path. These people are not dumb when it comes to their jobs.

@Rockets
I know they did volunteer work for a shelter and I sort of wondered if they came in contact with someone feeling really desperate and thinking they were an easy mark.

Maybe someone they offered work around the house to trying to help them out? IDK, just makes me wonder. I'm sure if at my citizens insight level I'm thinking along those lines - the authorities have been all over that possibility as well.

Exactly. In the end they will catch the people who did this. It's just a matter of time. You will see.

I hope they catch them soon. That would be hard to deal with that situation with out any closure.

Easy target? If they were robbed then why brutally kill them? It's usually personal or they must of known them.

By "easy" I mean't given their age - maybe not able to resist as well, and if they knew them perhaps easier to gain access to their home.

Killing them may have just been to cover their tracks so they don't get caught.

By March 7, newspapers had piled up on their front porch and their daughter, Judith Crane, hadn't heard from them as she regularly did. Crane called a neighbor, who went to check on them around noon that day.

The neighbor found the back door unlocked and called police.
The couple's belongings had been rummaged through and strewn about and insignificant items were unaccounted for, lead investigator Sgt. Mark Reynolds told the Chronicle on Wednesday. Police declared the causes of death to be blunt force trauma and the motive of the gruesome murder to be robbery.
"There was a delay in the reporting, so some of that was not in law enforcement's favor," Reynolds said. "It was just really sad, these were not high-risk victims."

I kept thinking about this as I was trying to go to sleep last night on the fold out bed in my Mom's hospital room; particularly after seeing some posts from one of their relatives. (My deepest condolences if you're reading this). Perhaps I'm overly dramatic, but I watch some of those shows about cold cases, etc. and some times the murderer(s) toss things about in the home to make it appear as it they are robbing them & to throw LEO off course? Also, If they knew them, let them in the front, then the person(s) turned and locked the front door; did their crime and went out the back? I wouldn't think these folks would provide their home address to anyone at a shelter, but you never know. Ever since this happened, I can't help but think something doesn't add up. Hoping and praying they find out who did this to these precious seniors and that they get their due. I cannot imagine if these were my parents or Grandparents. Rest in Peace.

Thank you so much for your kind words! And I believe everything you said to be true. I think they knew the killer - I don't believe they went there with plans to kill them - they didn't even take a weapon - but something went wrong, and they got mad and brutally killed them. I don't think much was stolen from the house - a computer was not taken and their Lexus was still in the garage. Don't believe any credit cards have been used. It just doesn't make sense!
