Sheriff Gonzalez Opts Out Of ICE Program

[Press Release via HCSO]

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez gave official notice Tuesday that he is opting out of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s voluntary 287(g) program.

The decision places Harris County in line with 251 of 254 Texas counties that do not take part in the program that allows ICE to deputize local law officers to perform certain federal immigration enforcement functions in jails. The decision will free at least $675,000 in the sheriff’s budget to more effectively direct resources to address local public safety issues.

The process to begin termination of the HCSO’s participation in this voluntary program will begin immediately. It is Sheriff Gonzalez’s intent that the transition away from this program be conducted in a smooth, responsible manner that prioritizes the continued safety of the residents of Harris County.

A good move to free up these funds and use our deputies time wisely.
Still cooperating with ICE.

I guess that is why George Soros was backing him and the DA.

Didn't lose any, if you are worried about it, they say they are still cooperating with ICE. The program was having a negative effect on his budget, costing us as taxpayers .

This was a bad move. The sheriff goal is to protect public safety and not political beliefs. The illegal aliens in his jurisdiction would be criminals not worthy of our time in our community. I guess this sheriff has not learned from the previous San Francisco Sheriff fallout of the Jessica Steinle case.

You actually believe that. The deputies involved in this program are fully funded from federal funds and not county funds. If there is a budget mishap than I would look at the sheriff himself instead of the federal government. I do talk with these guys.

Looks like the majority of other Texas counties made the same decision. Use those funds to protect local public safety issues.

Of course, that's why our sheriff is making the move. See the last statement in his press release below.

So what did deputized local police do for ICE? Considering how few sheriffs participated it must not be very useful or efficient since it cost them money.

You can thank all those that voted for our new Sheriff and DA, whom might I add, got a significant amount of outside help to win these posts. We had an excellent Sheriff and DA already in place IMO.

We also had an excellent President. Too bad he couldn't run again. Trump apparently had a significant amount of outside help. Everything that Putin could muster.

Outside, as in Soros. It is well known he funded Ogg's campaign. This is getting stupid. Illegals need to go, period!
