The vet is expensive. Are there any online discount pet supply stores? I haven't had much luck in my search. I like the Trifexis, since it also kills fleas.

How much are you willing to pay? We pay less than $35 a month combined for Trifexis between our two dogs. We buy them from our vet at Animal Care Center of Lake Houston in Huffman. That's almost half what our old vet charged. You could try 1-800-Pet-Meds.

@asxshadowsxfade

That's where I went. They charged me $99 for a 6 month supply. I guess it's a good price, because what I am finding online is a tad more than what I paid.

It's been seven years since I last had a dog and I am just amazed at the price increases of basic care needs. It's crazy. And the prices of all of these fancy schmancy dog treats are amusing.

@Sammee $99 isn't so bad. We pay around $120 for 6 months. The price also depends on the size of the dog...ours is 60 + lbs.- so she has to have the pricier one. Emoticon

@Sammee : There are lots of really easy homemade dog treat recipes out there... I make them for my granddogs all the time. MUCH cheaper!!

My dog is small, so that's a bonus as far as pricing goes. I have been looking online and there just isn't anywhere cheaper than the vet.

@FNULNU1954
I'll have to look into that. I wish I had a jerky dehydrator machine, because the dog jerky treats are insanely expensive. This dog needs a lot of training and I use tiny pieces of jerky as rewards. The poor little guy's former owner didn't teach him any commands or how to behave appropriately. I'm gonna need lots of jerky.....

I get my cat and dogs flea preventive from Amazon... but the heartworm I get from the vet. I've looked elsewhere and found the vet to be cheaper than online.

I don't know if this is smack-talk or not, but I've been told by 2 different vets that the meds from the 800-online stores often come from overseas and are "counterfeit" and "potentially dangerous." I'm too lazy busy to research the validity of that, so I just buy from our vet. Emoticon

@Sammee I buy Trifexis from my vet for my girls. One 12 lbs the other 70lbs.
Sometimes they offer rebates. Check their website. I think I got an email from them recently.

As for the treats, I buy Pupcorn at Walmart. They love it, and it's low fat, low calorie, low sodium. I get a huge *** barrel of it for like 12 bucks, and it lasts for a long time, even with two dogs. If you look it up online at Walmart, it says it's 17 bucks, but I've never paid that.

@BRITT Looking for a "small town country vet" . Had best service in the past in other states. Thanks for the info.

Lonestar vet is where I take mine - first visit is free also. Decent prices on meds. Also for some things try feed stores even Tractor supply. Rescues a lot of times will even buy all but rabies shots to give dogs from feed stores. Horses, Cows and sheep all have the same meds as dogs - all bought at feed stores just dogs in smaller doses. And if you have a good honest vet they will tell you that and tell you dosages! Emancipet in Houston has cheap flea meds and heart worm meds also!!

I used to buy heart-worm preventative from Petmeds until our vet stopped issuing a prescription for them. Never had a problem - healthy pets.
