Are there any local animal shelters? I'm looking for a dog 5+ yrs old. Does anybody have experience adopting through a shelter? I need advice so that I can ensure it is a reliable shelter. I don't want to end up with a sickly or aggressive dog.

I've adopted 2 dogs from pals for pooches, I think that's the name. They usually are at the petco over by chuckecheese in humble on weekends. I've had the dogs over 3 years and have never had any issues. You may check with @lola too.. she works with twylas.

Just hit up the local pet smarts and petcos on weekends. Usually a wide variety of dogs and they do good job of only letting in legitimate rescue groups.

I have contacts with people active in the Basset Hounds rescue and Pug rescue if interested in those breeds.

Montgomery county animal shelter is huge. Less than $100 to adopt.

I have been looking at rescue groups online and the adoption fees are expensive. $400 for a halfbreed adult dog?!

Contact Lonestar Animal Welfare League. I volunteer with them. They do mostly Labrador rescues- there are several 5plus year old dogs. Lucky comes to mind. I fostered then adopted his room mate Hunter- he's been a great addition. All dogs have been vetted and some of them ( like Lucky) their back grounds are known. We will be having a meet and greet event ( we do not do on the spot adoptions) April 19 by Pet Ranch in Kingwood

@ Jpgurl I love Lucky's "resume"! He's a good looking dog, too. How large do labs get? He looks like 50-60lbs?? Our prospective dog will have a little 70lb. human to walk with, so I will need a dog that she can handle.

Well he's 7 so he's full grown . I'm not sure what his weight is- I can ask. His room mate ( NOT same litter) was a big boy at 80lbs.- we put him on a diet and he is a svelte 70 lb. go to the site and email and I wiil email at my end!!

You can look online at dogs avail at Harris county animal shelter and go meet them too. Think it's great to adopt from a shelter vs buy a new puppy!!

@Jpgurl

Any idea what's the adoption fee for LSAWL? Not shown on their web site...

I'm thinking about getting a gun dog... one I can train to retrieve ducks and take hunting during the season or take on hikes thru the woods... But I'm sure that will raise some eyebrows with the adopting agencies:"you are taking the dog where? he is going to go deaf... or freeze to death... or drown! you're a bad person!"

I'm interested in hear what @lola may have to say... I want to be totally honest if/when I decide to get a dog... I think the right dog may have a blast (no pun intended) spending time outdoors, doing the stuff his breed was created for, etc.

@sandman I volunteer @ Harris Co shelter.. They have a ton of labs come through and its relatively cheap on adoption fees (includes fixing them, shots, and Harris County life time tag) A Lot are puppies & moms but are pretty close to pure breed beautiful bouncy Labs!
