Okay let me get this straight, the President plays an instrumental part in securing the release of an American soldier held by the Taliban for nearly 5 years. The administration brokers a deal where 5 Guantanamo Bay detainees were freed in exchange. Now some Republican lawmakers are accusing Obama of breaking the law by not making proper notification to Congress before the exchange was made.

My question is where was all this hand wringing on the part of Republicans when President Reagan secretly gave military weapons to Iran in exchange for their assistance in securing the release of American hostages in Lebanon?

www.mia.org.il/archi ve/861106lat.html

My God is this what it has come to? A President of the United States criticized for securing the release of an American soldier held in enemy hands? Is the hatred of this man so great for some that they would rather this soldier was left behind to die when we pulled out of Afghanistan?

President Obama cannot win. Had the soldier been left to his fate he would have been criticized for not caring about this country or the soldiers that fight and die for it. But now that this young man has been released, he's vilified for freeing "terrorist". Now I suppose some IDIOT in Congress will propose his impeachment over this affair.

You know I'm not going to debate anyone on this. I'm just posting my opinion. As always it's interesting to see others point of view. But I won't do a back and forth on this one. I'm just beyond disgusted.

Rocket, it's great that the soldier is home.... It's awesome fir his family......

But do you not see that this empowers terrorists now to try and go after troops..... Now knowing that we will negotiate with them......

Just asking

As far as not notifying congress , I don't know if it's law or not.... But Obama couldn't care less about balance of powers and THREE branches of govt....

Glad the soldier is home

I stopped at "the President plays." Why bring divisive politics into this?

Sgt. Bergdahl is coming home.

@rocket

this should not be about Obama, Republicans, and politics... both sides are going to try to play this against the other... nothing new there...

this should be about one of our soldiers coming home...

Yes...Unfortunately, this President would be criticized even if his flatulence had no offending aroma...

I am glad the soldier is coming home and should be with his family. Why politicize this event.

@cbp210:

The event has already been politicized, chiefly by members of the GOP, which is why I started this thread. You think the article I attached from the Washington Post is a forgery?

Well just in case you think I made the whole thing up and fabricated the response from top Republicans just to "politicize" the event on this board, here's another article from CNN

Does it matter that the soldier was AWOL, had wrote letters to his parents that he did not support the US mission anymore and simply walked away from his post that night. Does it matter that we gave them 5 top Taliban commanders... and does it matter that the white house has admitted now that it did not follow the law givving Congress the 30 day notice and provisions that the detainees would be of no further harm to the U.S.

Very slippery slope here Rocket, just wonder why you didnt include this in your original post, perhaps you simply did not know the whole story.....

I attached an article from the Washington Post in my original OP where those concerns were mentioned. I suppose you didn't see that.

Well I just read your post again and the link you supplied and "naturally" it never mentioned anything about the soldier being AWOL in it......

so again, you simply did not know the entire story.

I cant believe that we have become so mundane that a president that willfully violates a law, regardless of why, that the people simply dont care and then get up in arms when someone raises the concerns about it....

just stunning.....

Its not the first time that he sidesteps, circumvents, or simply ignores the constitution
Never thought I would see this in my lifetime......but whats even scarier is that a large % of Americans simply dont care...

I am also concerned that we now have established a precedent of negotiating with terrorists. This is completely contrary to US policy and every soldier knows this. The reasons behind this man leaving his post - he needs to be held accountable for. That is owed to everyone else who wears the uniform.
