Ok am I too uptight?

My son just got his license..he should have gotten it in Oct, but sports and life got in the way.
In his immediate circle, about 2 months is the longest anyone has had theirs. My son is a very good driver. His attention and observation skills, better than I expected. He has been driving for 2 years.
He has driven some highway, some night, lots of scenarios. However..I never had any intentions of cutting him loose the min he got his license. First of all, he is only supposed to have 1 occupant under 18 in the vehicle. None of his other friends parents seem to care about this, they let them take who ever. I mean, it’s the law for heavens sake..
Secondly,I just don’t feel he or any of them are ready for downtown Houston driving or the beach etc.
Well, he just asked if he could go downtown Monday, with at least 3 others. The one driving has had her license for 2 weeks. I just don’t get it…am I unreasonable on this?

@Lace I don't think you are being unreasonable. Only 2 weeks & she wants to drive downtown? I wouldn't ride with her. Or send my child. Remember you are the parent and not their friend. I know, tough love, it is tough on both parties.

@Lace - Absolutely not! You are correct in your thinking. Talk it out with him and express your concerns. Set limits now so he continues being responsible as you mention above.

No, you are a GOOD MOM. There just are less of us these days. I wouldn't allow it, either.

Not only is it stupid safety wise, it is against the law. The law was made for a reason.

You have the support of probably every ADC mom.

I would say no. Driving downtown is complicated and I wouldn't allow it. To school and back would be enough for me for a while

It's one thing around here but it's a whole other ball game leaving the city limits, i.e. Downtown. I'd say no! Mine gets a bit huffy with us at times, but dang it I paid for that car and I PAY FOR THAT INSURANCE. Frankly it's my responsibility to make sure you are safe. Downtown in my opinion will eat them up! Fast drivers and impatient! One way streets , yeah no!

Oh absolutely not. Mine has had her license for over a year and no beach or downtown. Kids from our area are not ready for all that. Now if we lived in Houston it might be a different story because you have to drive the freeway to get to a lot of places. Here in our bubble we have everything close by.

I myself is sometimes a nervous wreck having to drive downtown. I have to plan my routes. By the time i reach my destination i feel like i need a new steering wheel! I am a very experienced driver. To have a teenager driving downtown after just getting their DL. I would say no! Take the park and ride buses! My son had jury duty and is old enough he could go downtown. He wouldn't even drive. Too hectic he said. Took the bus. 6 yrs he had been driving but not in a downtown major city.

Why downtown? Where downtown? What time? For how long? With who? Do the parents know? Need to contact their parents. I fired question after question, then hell NO! God, hated those days. Had to be restrained when one kid crawled out of the dang trunk.

The reason I asked where is: my two are 26 and 24 and told me they were glad we said no, because their friends were clubbing downtown. After they had restrictions lifted, they both went downtown and the clubs were hangouts where kids could/would get in trouble. Not places they wanted to go to.

I worried my self sick, nagged, questioned, felt like b**** of the world.......sure felt good when they said thanks and they were glad I handled things the way I did.

@Lace :
I wouldn't let mine go . But you really should be all over Houston with your kid . How are they going to learn unless you or DH take them . Get in the car & drive to Galveston eat & come back . I said the other day we made our grand -kids drive us to Tennessee & all through the mountains . Your kids are better off with you at their side till they build up confidence I think .
