Downshifting

I'm going to try something new where you stop watching TV or using devices of any kind an hour before bed. It is called downshifting and it allows your brain to quiet so your sleep is more restorative.

So what do I do with this hour? I have some ideas -
Color in coloring book
Journal
Walk the dog
Read/spiritual practice
Yoga?

I'm not sure what else - what NON device slowing down things do you all do?

I like to do easy crossword puzzles and sit out back reading while the pups play. Let us know how it goes...I've been having trouble sleeping so should probably give this a try.

I think I'm addicted to my cell & tablet. I couldn't do it. Please do let us know how it goes. Sounds interesting. Probably something we should all do.

I actually fall asleep listening to Family Guy, The Cleveland Show, or American Dad on the tv.

I use my phone as my alarm clock, so it's the first thing I do is lay there and read facebook and check work emails. I fall asleep to House Hunters or something like that. I fall asleep with the phone in my hand. It's RIDICULOUS and must stop. new-more-zen behavior is on the way!

Here is the link to the informational podcast I listened to - it's down the page some called: Recharge and restore Rituals the Power of Downshifting Daily.

I hope that link works.

@hutch5801 no worries, we could talk more about the 60 minute thing; but someone may get embarrassed....

I need to start reading before bed again. I'm pretty sure playing on my tablet in bed is why it takes me forever to actually fall asleep.

@daddyo9 The podcast I listened to, and linked above, talks about what that does to your brain (the light and stimulation) and how your brain has to come down from that, which cuts into your deep restorative sleep time. She says we should read spiritual or uplifting books before bed. I am 200 pages from finishing the Dark Tower so I'm not sure I can quite keep to that recommendation!

Watching TV usually puts me to sleep! Otherwise I am up all night long!

Yes, I have been doing this too, for years but science says it's no bueno. Yes, you fall asleep but not deep sleep, so it's almost like you're losing an hour every night. An HOUR, that's huge. It's not so much about falling asleep as about how quickly your brain can quiet down into deep sleep. Something like that.

@Cabin_Mama
Dont think my typical books would fall in the uplifting category. The Dark Tower series did put me to sleep though. Think I quit on the third book. Just didn't hold me.
