For The First Time In 130 Years.......

More Young Adults Live With Parents Than Partners....

Story Here

Times are a changin'...The days of get a good job out of the gate and raise a family are gone...High education expenses, nursed by our salivating financial institutions wanting to keep our kids(and mom/dad too) in their pockets...Breakdowns in the traditional family unit, caused by the 2 income trap...It's not our politicians...It's our businesses, especially those that have the most reach into our daily lives...

Is it living with parents...or parents living with their kids?? That is what I'm seeing at least in my age group. There's no support for our elders, forcing them to move in with their kids.

@HumbleGirl :

That article is about living with the parents...But there's also the trend you're talking about...Many families are now moving the grandparents in to their homes in order to look after them instead of a retirement home or such...

Pretty soon, we could end up like China where generations are living together....If that happens for a while then the markets will adjust to absorb everyone's "extra money", like they did with 2 incomes, and eventually housing will become too expensive for even 2 hard-working people to afford...

Let's see...Mom has a car...Dad has a car...Oldest kid has a car...That's 3 right there....But how many houses do you see with 4 cars in the driveway and 2 on the street? Food for thought....

@macdaddy Employment is one issue, but I think rising costs of everything have hurt us. We spend a ton on useless medical insurance, property tax assessments went up this year, and the cost of quality food is much higher than it was a few years ago.

Not that I would ever have to, but I would totally not be butt-hurt moving my parents in and living with them. Neither would my DH. My parents are the bomb.dot.com!

Now, my in laws?

My sister still lives with my mom and she's 28. She also has zero motivation to improve her skills so she can make more than $10 an hour and support herself. She always has enough money to go to concerts, buy new clothes, and pretty much anything that she wants, but can't seem to afford to live by herself. She went to school to be a teacher, but decided to quit after her Associates degree and never went through with the student teaching requirements because she didn't get paid for it. Now she's a babysitter at a day care with hardly any benefits. She didn't even have to pay for her own education, like I have to do. She even gets a subsidy for her medical insurance. I'm sure there are plenty of people down on their luck that need to stay at home with their parents, but there are many who have the ability to improve their skills to support themselves, but find it easier to milk their parents for all they can.

I always encourage my daughter to marry money so I can live in style in their guest house. And they better have a nice pool with comfortable lounge chairs.

As the population ages with many not having saved enough for true retirement, we will seeing more generations living together and also more unrelated people (friends) living together out of economic necessity. The "hippies" will return.

In my opinion this trend has little to do with a president. I swear some people think the occupant of the oval office has these little strings where they control everything from employment to the price of Tootsie Rolls.

In my view one major contributor to this trend is the way we parent kids now. There's far more coddling going on than in past generations. Parents are more quick to intervene in every perceived unfair situation. If a child doesn't make the cheerleading squad they sue. If little Johnny doesn't play in the baseball game they seek to oust the coach.

Even schools have gotten into the act. In many areas no longer are Valentines Day cards allowed to be distributed in class unless every kid gets one. That goes for birthday invitations too. Some districts have told teachers not to use red ink anymore because it might hurt the students self esteem.

So yes while economic issues certainly plays a role, many young people are ill prepared for the struggles and patent unfairness of everyday life. Additionally, in the instant gratification world they grew up in they want what took their parents years to accumulate NOW. Why toil to get something your parents already have? Hmm, anyone see the remote to the 75 inch flat screen?

@HumbleGirl :
I think if the elders thought about retirement & being not able to do for their-selves they took out insurance for assisted livings or made sure they had the money to have the help they needed . My mom paid on a policy for almost 30 yrs & we her children didn't want her in an assisted living . We started off with 3 shift changes a day till I found someone I liked to move in & live with her . Then we had a lady to relieve the woman that lived with her 2 days a wk . Of course if she needed more time off one of us sat with our mother .5 of her 6 kids lived in the same town .
