New school superintendent

They are announcing live now on TexanLive.

---------------------

The Humble ISD Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Elizabeth Celania-Fagen as Lone Finalist for Humble ISD Superintendent. Dr. Fagen brings 20 years of experience in education, including eight as a superintendent leading large school districts. She currently is superintendent of the 67,000-student Douglas County School District in Colorado. She also served as superintendent of the 56,000-student Tucson Unified School District in Arizona.

“We are excited about getting the best education mind in the country,” Humble ISD School Board President Robert Sitton said. “It’s powerful what she is going to be able to do. When people talk about education, we want them to say, you really need to go see what Humble ISD is doing. She is, in our opinion, the leader to take us there.”

Dr. Fagen earned her doctoral and master’s degrees and her education specialist degree from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and her bachelor’s degree from William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She examined teacher standards, teacher quality and teacher effectiveness for her dissertation. Her experience also includes being a central office administrator over high schools, a high school principal, a biology and chemistry teacher, and a tennis coach in Iowa.

"I am honored that I have the opportunity to follow an excellent leader and wonderful person like Dr. Guy Sconzo -- to lead Humble ISD forward in the best interest of its students, staff, and community,” Dr. Fagen said. “I know I have big shoes to fill, and together, Dr. Sconzo and I are committed to providing the best transition in education.”

The Humble ISD School Board began a national search in January for a new superintendent due to the upcoming retirement of Dr. Sconzo. Humble ISD’s opening for superintendent attracted 43 applicants from 14 states. Seven were selected for initial interviews. Three candidates who participated in initial interviews were invited back for second round interviews.

“My family and I are excited to become members of the Humble ISD community,” Dr. Fagen said. “As an educator, leader, and parent, I am delighted to have this opportunity. I want to thank the Humble ISD Board of Trustees for selecting me to be part of their Team of Eight. I have enjoyed getting to know each one of them throughout this very thoughtful process, and I am grateful to be the Lone Finalist."

Dr. Fagen understands fast-growth, high achieving school districts. Douglas County School District, a suburban district between Denver and Colorado Springs, grew 8,000 students in the last six years. This is comparable to the growth being experienced in Humble ISD. Douglas County is among the highest achieving school districts in Colorado, and has the highest median income in any Colorado county. Humble ISD was named the best large district in Texas in the 2015 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards.

"The Board has worked very diligently to find our next Superintendent of Schools,” Dr. Sconzo said. “She is a true leader for learning, and it is only and always about the children for her! I'm thrilled they have found someone with a successful track record leading large, complex school districts. I know Dr. Fagen will be a significant asset to our schools and community."

A formal motion to appoint Dr. Fagen is anticipated to occur at the June 14 School Board meeting. Dr. Fagen will begin work in Humble ISD in July, with the specific date to be determined later. Dr. Guy Sconzo, superintendent since 2001, will remain as a consultant to the new superintendent and board through December 31.
