Average age for kids to get a cell phone is 10, according to study

HOUSTON - Kids are growing increasingly connected to the internet and social media through more platforms, according to a study.

Influence Central, a marketing agency, surveyed 500 women about the role of digital technology on their families. The research is an update to its previous study in 2012.

The agency found the average age for kids to get their first cell phone is 10.3-years-old. More children are also gaining access to the internet through their own laptops and tablets. In 2012, only 42-percent of kids had their own laptop or tablet, compared to 64-percent today.

Tablet use particularly rose from 26-percent to 55-percent.

Knowing that their children have their phones with them most of the day, more parents are using the GPS feature and apps on their smartphones to track their kids. The number of families actively using GPS has more than doubled to 15-percent in 2016, according the survey.

Kids are also getting their first social media accounts at the average age of 11.4-years-old. Another 11-percent got a social media account younger than 10.

10 seems young to me, but eager to see what everyone says.

Mine got it at 11. We don't have a home phone and I get the little one's friends calling my cell. He may get his phone at 10 (no internet access) just to keep his friends from calling me!

I'd probably get a child one when they would be able to use it for security.

My son got one at 11. We also don't have a land line home phone. I think he plays games on it more than talks on the phone 🙄 I was ok w it just for the fact if something happens while he was out riding bikes w his friends he could call me. Now for my very overly independent 8 yr old "the mayor of the block" this is what I got him. He's not allowed off our circle at the end of the street but his friends house is all the way at the end of the street. They play ball and ride scooters and it gives me piece of mind he hasn't crossed over his perimeter! Also he can call 911 from it if ever needed. I don't have to worry about the phone features such as social media and its strapped to him so he won't loose it!

My oldest was 8, so he could call me when visiting his dad out of state and my youngest was 9 so he could call me as he walked home from school.

Both kids were given a phone once their individual sports had them practicing the same days in venues across town from each other. They almost never text or call (except to us). Used primarily for gaming.

I'm guilty. My DD got her first phone in 5th grade. Yes it's young, but when you have active children and always on the go, it's a good thing. My oldest son inherited my ex husbands phone when we separated and he was in 6th grade.

I see the pros and cons in having phones at such a young age. We don't have a home phone and haven't had one in about 10 years.

My nephew was about 8 when he started to fly alone to visit his mother. That was when they first got him one.

Absolute necessity for walkers these days! With all the perverts trying to pick kids up, no way would mine walk without a phone!

I like that watch @Tuckersmom. How much was it?

DD has been wanting a phone since first grade because some kids had them then. I think most of those kids were from broken homes and the mothers wanted them to be able to call when away at their fathers houses--totally understandable. I told her that she can get a cell phone when she gets a job to pay for it. ☺

Having a young child at home, I am not at all comfortable ditching the landline.

My oldest will be going to middle school next year and we're thinking about it. We've heard several people mention that sometimes its used in class for work on the internet so if they don't have one then they have to share with others. Probably will give him an old phone so he can use the wifi at school and if he can show he won't lose it or let it get stolen then get him a better one with a number.
