FEMA cars

Was at the FEMA center in Greens point and they are telling all of the clients that had flooded cars there and do not have insurance they will replace their cars for up to 9.000$.

Also they are giving free money to those on second floor who were not affected. As one person told me "all I want the government to do is make it like it was before the flood".

Is this really our governments job ?

Where is the press on reporting this??

If FEMA is giving money to people to replace their cars. It seems unfair to those with insurance not to receive anything. It's the law to have insurance. Why should responsible drivers with full coverage have their rates increased to make a claim to replace their vehicles not get help? And helping those living in units on the second floor that don't need help is just BS. And government wonders why people want to elect someone willing to say enough to throwing away our money.

It's the law to have liability, not replacement coverage.

According to FEMA website regarding a similar flooding issue in Mississippi, FEMA may assist those car owners that lost vehicles IF the vehicle had at least liability insurance and otherwise was in compliance with applicable state laws at the time of lost.

Additionally in this special circumstance FEMA acts as gap insurance. The policy holder would have to file with the insurance company of record first. So it would appear the federal government is not just giving free money to people who didn't follow the applicable laws in the first place.

I am confused why people are disgusted. We have a system in place to provide assistance when a natural disaster occurs.

You have people with their house and car flooded and you have people "disgusted" over the help we are providing them .

I remember when I was out of college, and if something like this would have happened to me,it would have been catastrophic. Now that I am older, I have things in place to prevent asking for assistance.

I would rather my money go and help people return back to normal.

You can't keep saying all people are lazy. There might be.some good apples in the batch you keep calling bad.

So many good hardworking people are barely making it - something like this could be devastating. I think this is a good way for the money to be spent. You need a car to get to work, you need a car to get to school - all the things that people need to do to stay off other kinds of government assistance. Houston isn't walkable.

I doubt very much that it's going to second floor people not impacted - local news coverage showed many instances where second floor people had several feet of water - that is just how incredibly bad the flooding was.

@Matthew87 It pays to be poor sometimes. It is the same with houses. Those that pay high premiums have high deductibles and they will only pay so much over the life of the home before they don't insure. So with this once my house is not insurable, Fema would step in. Good to know.
