Texas man killed intervening in domestic dispute

A concealed handgun permit holder was shot and killed after he confronted a man that was involved in a domestic incident with his wife. Thirty-five year old T.J. Antell had just witness a man (Ricci Bradden) confront a woman in front of a Walgreens (His wife) in Arlington, Texas. Bradden took out a gun and fired two shots with one round striking his wife in the ankle. The woman ran back into the store and the shooter headed for his truck.

At this point Antell, a married father of three and former Marine, retrieved his own gun and tried to stop Bradden, an active duty soldier at Ft. Hood, from leaving. Instead Bradden got out of his truck and shot Antell dead. Antell's wife witnessed the entire incident.

My reason for posting this is people have got to realize they are not the police. They have not trained to be a police officer and should not try to act as one. I'm sorry Antell lost his life. That said in this scenario the most reasonable thing for him to do was simply be a witness because the woman was no longer in danger.

When officers responded Antell could have told them what happened, a description of the suspect, a description of the vehicle, and a license plate number would be awesome. Don't confuse a CHL with having gone through a police academy.

I agree... One of the scenarios described in my CHL class was finding a guy trying to have sex with a woman in a secluded area. You get involved trying to help the woman, only to find out they were a couple role-playing.

In this case, as you said, the best course of action was to just witness the confrontation and call the authorities. If Antell's life was in danger, then well protect yourself, but that wasn't the case here.

Like I've said here before, the purpose I got a LTC is to defend myself, my wife, my daughters or my mom. I'm not going to jail or getting shot for anybody else.

You wouldn't intervene if a child or women was getting abducted or assaulted severely

Like I said, with no doubt & 100% certainty, I would fire my weapon to defend myself, wife, daughters and mom. For all other scenarios, I just don't know.

If a child is been abducted, how do I know that the abductor is not the father of the child, who the ex-wife hasn't allowed him to see in 5 years, even with a court order? Think about it... even if a woman is yelling "help, his taking my kid" how do I know she is really the mother? She could be the abductor and the person that "appears" to be the abductor is actually the good guy.

If a woman is been severely beaten, how do I know is not in self-defense? Maybe she's with one of the cartels and has stabbed her victim, and the person is now trying beat her to save his life?

Yes, in an obvious situation, I think that I would get involved, but reaching for my gun wouldn't be the first thing I do... I would call the authorities and if I feel my life is in danger, then I would defend myself... using deadly force if justified.

I don't want to waste my life going to jail for doing what I thought was right, when I had limited information and made the wrong assumptions.

true that......What if you were walking through the mall and some nut job was randomly shooting people....your life wasn't in immediate danger cuz you were a few stores down and hidden....would you open up on him? To stop the killings or to stop him before he got to you?

hmmm... I wouldn't go and put myself in harm's way, unless my wife/daughters/mom are at the mall too and not right by me. Then I would go looking for them, in the direction of the shooter in case they are in danger. Then, I would engage the shooter if I had the opportunity and I'm certain the person is the shooter.

I'm not a first responder and I'm not looking to be a hero... I'm not a coward either, but I have too much to lose to play hero.

If she's getting her *** beat it's probably not the first time and she will defend her man in the end anyway.

Tough decision. Unfortunately this person chose very poor tactics getting within any reaching distance of the bad guy. 21ft minimum when you have the choice of location. Brave call on his part. No one knows until you are in that situation. At that time maybe someone else's wife or daughter becomes important to you also. Then you have to decide what you can live with if things go bad and you did nothing but could have.

@TX Partsguy

In this scenario Bradden was attempting to leave. His victim had already retreated back into the store. There was no reason for Antell to have approached him at all.

Once again sometimes the BEST thing you can do in a crisis situation is be a great witness.

Agreed. He escalated the situation and unfortunately paid an awful price for it. Terrible.

I agree with everything you posted @sandman. I share those scenarios with my LTC student. When I was at the DPS academy in 2009 learning to become a LTC instructor, or DPS instructor mentioned similar scenarios and told is to call 911, and try your best to avoid the situation.

I like what you said "I'm not a first responder." Similar to you, my first priority is making it to my wife and daughter safe, and unhurt. Also, making it home without having to call an attorney, or potentially been sued because some nutcase husband and wife are fighting and will be together the following week.

Even first responders wait for back up and not react solo. This guy made a poor decision and did what we call in the Academy "Tombstone Courage". I have seen fights between boyfriend/girlfriend, best friends, family members and never once I intervened or got involved with the exception of using the phone and letting the proper people take control.
