HCSO investigating shooting death in Humble
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office seeks the public’s assistance for any information in the shooting death of a 24-year-old man in Humble last night.
HCSO deputies responded to a shooting at approximately 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 in the 1900 block of Cascade House Drive in the Woodland Pines subdivision in the Humble area.
“When deputies arrived on the scene, they located the victim, Erron Shamlin, lying in the street with a gunshot wound to the chest,” HCSO reported. “Shamlin was transported by EMS to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Shamlin played for former Humble men's basketball coach David Martinez from 2008-2010. Shamlin was an aspiring rap artist in the area.
"He was a good kid," Martinez said via text message. "He worked really hard and his dream was to be a college basketball player. He trained and trained but just couldn't catch a break in college."
Last summer marked the final time Martinez, who coached at Humble from 2006-2012, saw Shamlin.
During that meeting Martinez said Shamlin told him about him being a local rap artist and Martinez urged him to finish is education because he needed something to fall back on.
"Erron was a good kid," Martinez said. "I always worried about him because I knew how hard he was trying. Life has a funny way of humbling you, so it is important that you have something to fall back on. I remember the conversation like it was yesterday."
During his playing time at Humble, Shamlin was a quality player, Martinez said, helping the program get to the second round of the playoffs in 2010.
With the news of his death, Martinez said he was saddened because of the bond coaches create with their players and their parents during their time in high school.
For the former Humble coach this hits close to home.
"The kids that played for me all know how much I care about them," Martinez said. "Erron was and always will be family. May he rest in peace."
The Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit is conducting the investigation into the murder of Erron Shamlin. Anyone with information regarding his death is asked to contact the Homicide Unit at 713-274-9100 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
