University of Houston-Downtown Associate Professor of Music, musicologist and performer Yvonne Kendall, will share the rich musical history of Spain at the 2nd Annual UHD Hispanic Heritage Month Concert, 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 25, in the Willow Street Pump Station, 811 N. San Jacinto St. Admission is free. Public parking is available.

Kendall, who holds a DMA from Stanford, has researched Spanish music and dance in the centuries-old libraries of Barcelona. In her popular UHD music courses, she shares knowledge of the Spanish music created during the time of Bach and Handel that until recently, was virtually unknown in North America.

Musicians will perform selections on 18th century period instruments, such as the baroque flute, Kendall plays. Joining her are guest artists Andrés González on baroque violin, Brady Lanier on viola de gamba (an ancestor of the cello) and Phillip Kloeckner, lecturer in music at Rice University Shepherd School of Music on harpsichord. The group will play chamber works by 18th century Spanish composers José and Juan Pla, José Herrando, and Diego Ortiz.

The UHD Cultural Enrichment Center sponsors programs that enrich the academic life of the Houston community and celebrates the cultural and ethnic diversity of the University and Houston. Jane Creighton, director of the center, is an associate professor of English in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. For more information about the concert contact Yvonne Kendall at 713-226-5237, or the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, at 713-221-8009.
