This is an excellent opportunity for future education majors. AVID is in its third year at Humble ISD; it is funded through the High School Allotment funds given to each district to support college readiness initiatives and programs. The schools participating in AVID are Atascocita High School, Humble High School, Kingwood High School, Kingwood Park High School, Summer Creek High School, Atascocita Middle School, Ross Sterling Middle School, Humble Middle School, Kingwood Middle School, Creekwood Middle and Riverwood Middle School, Timberwood Middle School. Applicants must be strong in the areas of math, science and English; Pre-AP and AP course experience is preferred.
Tutors are essential to the success of the AVID elective class where they facilitate student success in advanced classes. Each secondary school has multiple AVID classes in which tutors are needed 2-3 days each week to work with small groups of students. High school students must be seniors in dual credit courses and available from 1-4 PM. University and college students are highly desirable as tutors because they serve as college role models for the AVID students. All tutors receive 16 hours of mandatory formal training in AVID methodologies and good tutoring procedures. Tutors are needed for a Tuesday/Thursday or Monday/Wednesday schedule for a minimum of three hours per day. Tutor pay begins at $10 per hour.
There is a strong need for several tutors for the 2009-2010 school year at a variety of Humble ISD secondary schools.
